I recently bought a 1984 C20 swapped with a 6.5 turbo diesel for $2k from a coworker. The body is nearly rust free, and runs like a top. I estimate the power to be 300hp/450tq. Obviously it's not fast, but it's such a nice truck to daily drive and run errands. Gets over 20mpg too. I know 6.2/6.5 engines have a bad rap, but the common issues have been addressed with this, and the glow plugs were wired with a heavy duty circuit. It starts up in single digit weather no problem. I'm really impressed with it for a daily, and I plan to keep it for as long as I can. I might even consider swapping one in my 79 K10.

What kind of crime did I commit that you'd sentence me to forever in an old ford with a 7.3?
Great engine, and the 2002 7.3 F350 I had was probably the GOAT work/site truck, but no way Id want to daily one. If it was parked next to my Coyote/6spd F150 i'd take the gasser any day of the week.------♥♥-----

Diesels today aren't worth a chit. You have to worry about a 7,000 dollar DPF failure, constant regens, and adding urea fluid into the truck. EPA ruined diesels in 2007. I wouldn't own a truck that wasnt pre emissions. Anything after 2007, unless fully tuned/deleted is a disaster waiting to happen.

Diesel fuel has increased in cost significantly and newer diesel requires adblue which further increases cost. When I was thinking of getting a Sprinter van to convert to a stealth camper, I was looking for older models before adblue, but then fuel cost went up anyways.

I am still driving a 2003 F250 7.3l Lariat Crew Cab with 119k miles on it. Bought it for $8k from my dad when it had 69k miles back in 2016. Texas truck and not a pile of rust.
