Who the fuk keeps a car for 300k miles? That's like 20 years?

Why not trade it in for another car while it has a little value left instead of running it into the chitter?

Diesel engines don't make much sense in passenger cars or light duty trucks. You aren't hauling or towing every day. Engines cost +10k more than gas and fuel costs +25% more.

It would take you 10 years to break even on fuel.

A well maintained decent sized petrol engine will last 300k+ miles too.

Half the cars in the UK are diesel, petrol last just as long if maintained properly.

In fact, i'd argue a decent size N/A petrol engine will last longer than a diesel if properly maintained, because pretty much any diesel you buy is going to have forced induction.

Combine that with the fact there's more cabin vibration than an equivalent petrol, and the fact they are dull to drive vs petrol... i'm sweet thanks.

I've owned at least 3 german (6/8 cylinder) petrols that have clocked over 300k miles with just regular oil changes (every 7.5k).

For a truck, sure diesel clearly makes sense.

For a car? Nothanksjeff unless you really need the fuel savings.

Definitely see the advantage of diesel in HD trucks, but the complexity of the modern DEF / emission systems take a big bite of the pre-DEF mileage and reliability benefits.

Many 300K'ish range gas half tons out there with proper maintenance schedules.

Still is insane that you can get 450hp/1000ft trucks right off the lot now days, and if I had the need I would LOVE one.

Many 300K'ish range gas half tons out there with proper maintenance schedules.

Still is insane that you can get 450hp/1000ft trucks right off the lot now days, and if I had the need I would LOVE one.

Ive owned a few over the years and drove them on sites for 10+.

They are fine but unnecessary. Its like anything else, people could use a car for 90% of daily pickup use and 90% of diesel owners could use a gasser for 90% of their intended use.

I'm in oil country, and the number of people who drive 3/4 ton+ ego-diesels is hilarious.

Especially now, lets tie up $100k in capital because gas is for pussies.

While I'm sure they keep their value using todays prices isnt apples to apples. Hell my coworker bought a 06 Cummins Ram for 40K new. He just sold it a couple weeks ago for $32K cash with 140K miles. Prices on used cars in insane. He ordered a brand new F250,Gas, 4 dr long bed, Lariat for $56K.

My friend has had a Dodge with an inline 6 Cummins diesel for the last 10 years and never had any issues on it. Pretty sure that engine is right around 275->300K now as well, and he's had a few different turbo setups and tunes on it.

I'm sure it'll need a light rebuild at some point just to get fresh seals on everything, but yeah those engines are very resilient.

Diesel engines don't make much sense in passenger cars or light duty trucks. You aren't hauling or towing every day. Engines cost +10k more than gas and fuel costs +25% more.

It would take you 10 years to break even on fuel.

    better mileage in long run
