Angry What a weekend so far

Friday my wife noticed our sink drain leaking. Replaced the trap and laterals Friday night. Not a big deal. Then ran the sink for awhile and noticed a backup in the drain. We’ve never had an issue in the 16 years we’ve lived here so figured I was due for a sewer rodding to get the grease and roots out. Had one plumber out in the morning was going to charge $750 to rod. I said I’d let him know, then went and bought a power rodder at harbor freight for $350. Messed with that mess for awhile and it was unpleasant. Kept tangling up in the drum grease and nasty $hit everywhere. Finally gave up now back to searching for a reasonable plumber and the proud owner of a power snake I have no use for and can’t return. Lol yay me.

I don’t have a clean out, so had to remove the toilet in our 1 bathroom house. Now I lined up a guy coming tomorrow for $600 to use a hydro jet which should blast everything out provided the clay line between the house and sewer isn’t collapsed. That would really get expensive. No bathroom until tomorrow I guess. It’s like camping in the house.

In hindsight, when I was out in the yard in the freezing cold, covered in $hit and decades old grease, I was wondering why I just didn’t pay the first plumber. Then remembered because I’m cheap and I figured it can’t be that difficult and I’ll have a new tool I can help out friends and family with. It will work out better with the hydro jet at a lower cost than first plumber. I need to learn just to pay for some things like this from the start.

It will tomorrow. As long as I don’t have to $hit in a bucket before then I’ll be happy to pay. Just hoping it’s not more sever than a clog. Probably looking at $6-10k if I have to replace the main sewer line outside the house. Plumbing and electrical should be left to the pros…

Lol, sounds crappy. Just in the past few weeks I have had to replace a food grinder under my sink, two light switches, and a shower cartridge/regulator thingy that I didn't set properly. I didn't tighten the locknut enough and the shower just kicked on all by itself. I was also out of town when it happened. The house is 10 years old.

Not yet, we watched part of a movie. My wife usually makes it about 30 minutes anytime we watch a movie in bed. It’s crazy, her and the dog both fall asleep instantly. I got the book though. Haven’t opened it yet, but got it. Are there any sewer tips in there by chance?

When it rains it pours. My house was built in the 50s but has been pretty trouble free. Brick ranch, typical things over the years, furnace, water heater, probably due for a roof in the next 5.

Well based on some of the places I talked to being a plumber should have made her happy. One place told me their hourly rate is $475 on weekends and 275 during the week. BRB going to trade school lol. I used to have people from work to do all this stuff (have every trade) but not many hustle on the weekends anymore and since I’m in upper management now I’d rather not ask since it’d be weird to ask some of the younger guys that I don’t know.

Dude, its your job to keep her awake while watching a movie.

I flick popcorn or nuts at my wife when she starts dozing. The key of course being never getting caught.

and I've got no sewer tips nor are they in that book. Although, if u'd had already read the book, u likely wouldn't have been trying to snake out the poop pipe with a POS tool from Harbor Freight but instead called a professional.

A good night sleep and you'll be good as new.

Over the years there isn't much I have done homewise, grew up with a stepdad who was a contractor so from the age of 7 I have pretty much done it all. Anyways I had issues with my drain backing up and it was between the house and the street, went out & rented a power auger and few 175' of line thru the sewer which was more than enough to reach the street. Damn sewer still backed up, ran it thru again with the same results/ Got pissed and gave up and called Roto Rooter, they came out with damn near the same exact equipment, same cutting head, etc, few it thru 1 time & the clog was gone. I'll be damned if I know what they different then I did but in the end it was worth it.

Usual pain all over my body, but still alive and kicking.

Enjoyed slow jogging under the clear blue sky listening to an audiobook (Alistair MacLean's 1957 novel "The Guns of Navarone") during the day and now drinking hot sake watching movies before bed.

Wish you all a happy weekend!!

Yeah there is skill / experience involved evidently. I got the snake down and back twice but in between I had to take it outside and respool it. It’ll be on Craigslist by tomorrow. Luckily I rushed out and grabbed it because it was on sale and none in stock anywhere but a harbor freight in the next county.

A good night sleep and you'll be good as new.
I usually just ask her if she’s still watching, she’s actually able to respond yes despite being asleep. There’s always next time lol. I’m glad I’m getting the hydro jetting done though. That should keep us in good shape until we are out of this state and retired. They have enough water pressure to cut fingers off, so it will blast everything out of the pipe into the conveyance sewer.

Plumber should be here around 12:30, I’ll be happy or pissed by later in the afternoon. What a wasted weekend dealing with this. Our kids are going to a birthday party all day today, missing out on an opportunity for “no kids in the house sex”

Not that anyone cares, but so far everything has been going as expected. Plumber showed up 45 minutes late, smelled like beer combined with cigarettes and $hit. He was a decent dude though, and got right to it. Had to access the line from the crawl and I operated the controls on the hydro jet while he was in the crawl working the hose. We did that for about 15 minutes before we heard a loud noise and lost pressure. We went outside to see 3000 psi water spraying all over inside the plumbing van. The high pressure hose burst on the machine inside the van. So he’s going to get a new hose and come back tomorrow. While he was packing up I turned on all the faucets and tub to check the line where the toilet goes to see if what was done fully clogged the line since we didn’t make it all the way to the sewer. Everything seems to be draining. The main 4” line under the house was basically only open the width of the tool head I used yesterday. Paid him half of the price and he’s supposed to come back tomorrow to finish but it seems like the problem is fixed. I still want it done all the way to the street because the hydro jet will cut and blast out any roots hopefully preventing any more issues in the near future.

Had a rental house where every 4-5 months a plumber would have to run a roto-rooter through the clean out hole. There are several big trees in the back yard, and the sewer line is made of clay pipe. Tree roots grow into the sewer line. It's $250 every time he came out. Asked him how much it would be to replace the sewer line with PVC. He said $700. He replaced it about 6 years ago, and haven't had any issues since.

Had a similar issue years back, kept thinking it was going to be worst case scenario, rented a power auger etc. After a couple days of frustration I was in the basement scratching my head when I notice a pipe hanger that holds up the main sewer pipe had broken and the pipe had sagged just enough that waste had to travel uphill for a few feet before getting back to a downhill slope. I propped up the pipe with a 2x4 and all my issues went away.

I find that I usually have good “luck” but when something goes wrong in terms of the house, while rare, it is usually a cluster fuk

Yeah I’ve got roots too, pulled some up on the spade tool with the rodder, lots of big old trees on my street. Clay line from outside the house to the street. I’m pretty consistent dumping copper sulfate down the drain spring and fall to kill the roots (works really well). My primary issue was mineral deposits (struvite/ phosphorus) from 70 years of water and laundry detergents (used to be high phosphorus). Should be good until I retire and get out of this state (I hope).

Wow nice! I had a serpentine belt separate on a truck years ago. Part of it was flapping around for a day or two until I changed it. A week or so later the transmission started acting goofy. Took it to a shop that thought I needed a new trans. I was going to get a second opinin but when I was looking under the hood I noticed some bare wires that had the insulation slapped off by the belt. Sealed those up and it was good as new. Was a 02 Ford Explorer I bought hew right out of college when I started working. Thing made 250,000 miles between myself and after I gave it to my dad. He sold it just a year ago was still running great but the body was pretty rusty.

My Cousin is a general contractor and would just stop what he was doing and just think. He was very deliberate about it, you couldn't talk to him or anything and sometimes several minutes would go by with him being very still, eyes not moving or anything. I learned to just let him be, every time he did that it saved me time or money.

I learned to do it as well, especially working on a vehicle where there's so many wrong rabbit holes you can go down.
