What’s the recommended weight to add between leg squat sets? I usually add 10 lbs. for the next set, but some have said to go up (or down) by 20 lbs. What’s the optimal weight?
There is no right or wrong way. You can equally use the same weight in all sets or even drop the weight between sets.
I prefer to look at it like this:
1. for hypertrophy purposes, the weight used (the tension) can be in a very broad range of numbers - anything from about 30% of your max and above can be used to gain muscle.
2. You do a number of work sets (the volume) and each set is taken to within X reps of complete failure (the exertion).
3. The total workload (number of sets at a given exertion level) should be enough over time to produce a growth stimulus. It doesn't matter than much how your schedule your workload over the course of a week. Notice how the weight doesn't actually feature in that. You can have a high or low workload with high or low weights.
