fair to say although i also consider this. shawn was vince's pick. he was his favorite for years. so obviously, that breeds a hell of a lot of jealousy in the back. Michaels himself talks plenty about his problems and background but i try to just take some of the podcast/shoot interview stuff with a grain of salt. or at the very least, when comparing legacies, i leave that stuff out of it.
once you factor in the second half of his career - which i still feel like is being grossly overlooked ITT, it was fantastic - you have to give the "draw" edge to Shawn. Tickets, merch etc. go look at the mid 00's crowds wearing DX merchandise. as silly as some of that stuff was it was the hottest act they had.
bret was just done by that point so it's hard to compare. i'm sure he was the bigger ticket internationally when he was in his prime. but for example....WM26 was entirely about michaels. everyone knew he was retiring. the place had 70k+ plus in the house, the emotions were high, and he delivered. what a way to go out. bret never got the opportunity so maybe it isn't fair, but i give the "business" edge to shawn because of how he closed things out and how popular he was late in his career.

You'd think these guys would know a work when they see one

I only know about this because on Darkside of the Ring Scott Hall says it was a work but that video's not on YouTube.

Let’s be honest Bret had charisma/it. Zero charisma describes Dean Malenko, Lance Storm or Steve Blackman. Charisma isn’t an over the top mic skill, it’s what makes fans care about you and everyone cares about Bret he commanded and captured peoples attention and had them all emotionally invested in his work face, and heel. Shawn had a flashier personality and was a better talker, but Bret was no dry wall or charisma vacuum.

I prefer Michaels but just thought of why Bret was legitimately better than him...The Simpsons never asked old balding HBK to guest star on their show now did they.
Although Bret's Simpsons guest star appearance was good...but the best wrestling animation cross over easily goes to Hulk Hogan on American Dad. When The Hulkster and Stan clear house while Real American plays!

Bret easily. Was more popular than Shawn, is still more popular and even more respected. Shawn was only good for 2-3 years around 93-96. But he never had a 'great' match with any upcoming wrestlers. All his best matches were with Taker, Bret, etc who were already amazing at their graft. His return after back surgery wasn't anything special. Bret was at his peak from 91-97 and if he didn't get hurt, he would have been back at WWE still having amazing matches. You can watch every match of his on PPV now and still find it entertaining and real.

I don't share that opinion BUT to make the argument, it was in a weird fluxtime for WWF, between the highs of the attitude era and the Cena-era. Plus, a lot of that run was mired by being attached to HHH with the DX-revival stuff. Awful chit, they buried people, some horsechit 'comedy' thrown in. A very selfish run that gave us nothing interesting or exciting and just buried everyone involved with it.
Sure, when compared to the absolute dreck modern WWE is letting ooze out of their anus here in 2022, it might not seem bad at all - but Bret, even at his lowest point in WCW, was never attached to anything that godawful.
I do disagree, though. The programs with Jericho and Hogan had a lot of merit and entertainment to them. All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.
