I talked to a guy that did 30 years in TDC just got out recently, at Cofield or something. he was really big too. he said you're restricted to pushups and pullups...
plus he said food with protein is more expensive and prison food doesn't have much.
is it just weird genetics or something. he confirmed his daily protein was probably somewhere between 50 and 70 grams a day that's it.
225 / 15% BF, so pretty big
is it normal to get that big in prison without weights / bad nutrition?

Ok, so muscle mass and being athletic is related with childhood.
Boys who were more active in their childhood [jumping, crawling, throwing rocks, beatings] can gain muscle mass faster in their 20s or 30s than boys who were more into books and computers and were pretty much inactive.
And prison guys were more active in their childhood... it might be a misconception, but it's not, mkay?
Not sure if it is my theory, maybe I've heard it from some youtube guy.

Since resources are limited they have to find other ways to get it in. Inmates are forcibly innovative, use a lot of volume, never miss workouts(they don't have much else to do), are peer pressured constantly(fear of death raises both their motivation and testosterone levels), often go to failure(this and volume give them two forms of overload), etc.. They give their body every reason it could need to change for the better, so that's exactly what it does.

Going to failure builds mass in any rep range.
Protein needs are overstated by supplement companies who sell protein powder and pay for studies.
Protein gets you buff sooner, but these guys have lots of time.
Most of these guys have genetically high testosterone which makes this possible.
Most prison inmates are not buff.
Many buff guys lose mass when they go to prison.
...
But I plan to do more push-ups on my fists now, because my thumbs don't like barbells, and my wrists don't like flat hand. I enjoy the burn. Ways better than feeling strain in my joints.

The amount of resistance available doesn't surprise me - but what does surprise me is how that's possible with poor nutrition and seemingly not enough food to get big in free civilian life. I've speculated that maybe the big guys get tributes of food from people who are afraid of them.

From what I know, there is a prison store and you can buy food with the money you earn in prison, if you work - it depends on the region/country.
Also, relatives and friends can send food to them once in a while.
I don't know how bad the food is there, probably a lot of carbs, because they are cheap, and vegetable oils. Potatoes, beans, rice, bread. These tend to have enough calories.
Also, loads of semen, they have g** sex in there, probably that's why, to be in a caloric surplus.
They have powerlifting championships in prisons due to all kinds of educational programs, it's not all pushups.
When I visited Rome and Vatican, there were hundreds of statues from antiquity with shredded men. I wonder if those cared about being in a caloric deficit/surplus.
Has anyone seen Oz?
It reminded me about the scene when O'Reilly put crushed glass in the mobster's food to kill him.
Also, they had weights in Oz. O'Reilly kills some guy with a dumbbell while he was benching.

Even if you're completely serious about the gay sex as a source of protein, first of all I doubt even multiple loads a day would end up amounting to that much, and secondly, I wouldn't think the dominant alphas would be the ones receiving it anyway. But you're probably just joking.
And yeah, I wonder what kinds of portions they have in their regular dole of food. When I think of prison, I think of like The Shawshank Redemption, pre-civil rights midcentury setting. Apparently it's more humane now (at least institutionally).
In antiquity I highly doubt there was a conscious attempt to eat at a "deficit" in many cases. Activity levels and wholesomeness of food were of course conversely diametrical relative to today. From references in Plato, Aristotle, and a few other authors they seem to refer to athletes intentionally eating plenty. Think of how much fish or grainy bread you'd have to eat to get fat when you're highly active every day though.Bench: 350

Texas prisons are bad... commissary is where you buy food, but from my understanding they cap how much tuna you can have / better quality foods. Even with someone supporting your funds, you're restricted.
they do get just about anything in there.
this guy had a cell phone in prison and it's easy to verify people getting cellphones in there just by going on Youtube. they get drugs and believe it or not someone people even get guards to bring in steroids and they inject things hollowing out chicken bones (he said is mainly used for heroin).
I don't see how you can sustain the nutrition day to day.
Maybe this guy has unusually good genetics, I've met people before that get big and don't eat that well.

Few things could be at play here:
-Set schedule keeps you in routine (not much to do so might as well workout)
-no nagging females or other stressful aspects of life to deal with
-surrounded by lots of dangerous men
-low inhibition has been linked to higher testosterone levels and generally it's low inhibition men who end up in jail

I don't know how anyone hasn't mentioned it, but progressive overload would be pretty simple. Bench press, squat, hell overhead press could all be done by lifting other dudes. And as it's been pointed out, there are varying sizes of dudes. So start with the smaller dudes and progress to bigger dudes as you go. Pretty simple, really.

It's a different kind of stress though
Men are biologically wired to solve their problems/confrontations with violence
Having a factor that makes you aware of possible violence will generate natural instincts to get stronger, fight better etc.
With nagging women we would normally (naturally before laws etc.) discipline them with force/mild violence and they would stop nagging. But in our current society, laws prevent this and men are forced to have to find other methods which we aren't used to biologically or to simply put up with it, which again we aren't meant to do
It's like comparing a fish in water that may have to out-swim a shark once in a while vs a fish out of water, laying on dry land

The Juarez Valley method is supposedly a popular prison bodyweight routine. Regardless if it is or not, it shows you how you can get in some serious work with little to no equipment.
It's an alternating 20-1 pyramid workout where you do one set, then walk a short distance (supposedly to the other end of your cell) then do the next set.
So the set progression is like this: 20, 1, 19, 2, 18, 3, 17, 4, 16, 5, 15, 6, 14, 7, 13, 8, 12, 9, 10, 11.
Do push-ups, and that's 210 reps right there. Burpees are better though. Once one pump burpees get easy, do two pump or three pump burpees. If you work up to five pump navy seal burpees with that progression, you're going to do over a thousand push-ups per workout. I imagine over time that would have some benefits.
Imagine the possibilities. Split squats, pull-ups, dips, etc.
