I got a few things to say about driving stick shift
1. It’s not hard. My first car was a 1994 Ford Mustang and I got so frustrated at first that I wanted to trade it in for an automatic. But I stuck with it and it’s so fukking easy. You just gotta hit the clutch with your left foot to the floor, put it in 1st gear, and push down on the gas pedal as you simultaneously lift up on the clutch. It’s like an inverse motion. Left foot comes up and right foot hits the gas pedal just slightly until you let the clutch completely lift up and BAM you’re in first gear. Then you’ll hear your car revving up which is the sign to push the clutch all the way down, shift to 2nd gear, and then let the clutch up completely and you’re fully engaged. Keep doing this until you reach 5th gear which you’ll probably be on the highway at that point going 50-80mph. Depends on the car.
2. When you’re stopped on an upward hill, keep your right foot on the brake, put the stick in first gear but keep your foot on the clutch all the way to the floor and then take your foot off the break and immediately (but easily) hit the gas simultaneously as you lift the clutch. The key is to do this quickly so you don’t roll backwards and hit the car behind you. Don’t attempt this uphill drive until you’ve figured out how to drive manual on flat ground. Once you find out where the bite is on the clutch, you’ll get it.
3. When the car is revving up too much it’ll sound like the engine is screaming and you can’t go any faster in this low gear. This means you’re shifting too late. Better to shift a little early as a beginner than to shift too late. Around 2000-2500 RPM’s is about the range where you wanna shift to the higher gear. As you get more experienced you can wait to shift at a higher RPM.
Downshifting isn’t something I wanna go deep into but it’s not hard. Downshifting will extend the life of your brakes. Look it up.
Lastly, once you’ve mastered this you’ll realize that driving stick is kind of overrated unless you have a nice fast sports car. That’s where the fun comes in. If you’re driving just some regular car, stick shift can get old/boring real fast but some people enjoy it no matter what.
Anyone who brags about driving stick in any way is a douche. You are not less masculine if you don’t know how to do it. And you’re not Lewis Hamilton if you do know how to do it.
