Just how bad is to drink unfiltered tap water in the mainland US?

When I first moved out on my own about five years ago, I lived in a somewhat dingy apartment and so used a Brita filter for my drinking water. My current place is in a better area and is a little nicer, in the same metropolitan area but a different municipality, so I think the water source is different. I live in a landlocked state and all of our water reservoirs are from dammed lakes.

Anyway, on my bathroom faucets (tub and sink) I've noticed that some filmy stalactites form over time, so there's obviously some impurities (minerals or otherwise) in the water I drink here. Probably more than half of the water I drink comes from the delivered bottles in the cooler at work, but I still drink a significant amount of the tap water here.

I've already decided to use my Brita filter again, but how concerning would you say it is already to have been drinking this tap water for three years now? From what little I know, lead poisoning is a bit of a conflated concern, but I wouldn't have funk growing off of my faucet if it was completely fine...

If you live in Flint, best to filter it

Can you test it somehow? Google "tap water test kit" or something, or take it to a lab?

When I moved to Thailand I didn't know the tap water was not good. Made coffee with it everyday and everyday got a stomachache. Always thought it smelled and tasted odd but I'd lived different cities in Us and knew that water was different. Finally a girlfriend told me enough about it to make me start buying drinking water.

Use the Brita at least, and change the filter on time.

Berkey filters are also a great option if you want something sustainable. Basically bigger, better Brita that holds of a shyt ton more liquid

Here in LA & NYC it's totally fine AFAIK, but in the town I lived in Oklahoma, it wasn't safe to drink. The local govt. even notified us. Also, the water looked like diarrhea for about the first minute or so when you left the house for awhile and turned the tap on.

We got a Brita, and later, a fridge that filtered water. Srs. Stay safe, OP.

I live in Oregon and our local town draws its water from a river that is fed from snow melt. During the summer months when the river is running low, algae starts to grow and it taints the taste of water a tad. It does have a distinct smell but I still drink it anyways. Most of the locals (I call them locals however 80% of them have moved here from out of state), refuse to drink it.

I grew up on a well with the water containing a lot of iron and a strong sulfur smell. We drank it every day and seem to be ok other than our toilets, sinks and showers constantly turning yellow/gold within a week of cleaning them. I've lived in Arizona also and I will take either of the above choices over their water supply.

There are a lot of variables as mentioned. I have a TDS meter and have tested various taps. My house is under the FDA limit of 500. ButI used to work in a high rise downtown precovid. On the 30th floor it was way over the limit, averaged around 700ppm after testing all the taps. I tested it there because a coworker told me that the water in the office made him $h1t. The bathroom stalls were always full there.
My RO system says to test regularly because the membrane should be replaced if the before and after are higher than 10% of the before. Last i checked it was only around 3%

Brita filters really only make it taste better, the basic carbon filters aren’t really designed to remove TDS or other contaminants etc.

The calcification on your faucets you are talking about is due to “hard water” which is basically minerals dissolved in the water, calcium etc.

My last house was also on a well and definitely had a lot of calcification. What ever chemical was in the water did weird things our clothes other than turning whites yellow. My sweat would interact with whatever was in the water and it would smell AWFUL. Tried every single detergent/method out there and could not get rid of the smell.

You can buy water testing kits, asbestos kits, lead paint kits and other such whimsical things from Lowe's, HD and Ace Hardware. You take a sample and send it off. You get the results back and it's sort of like a diagnosis from my dad who is a doctor. You're going to die.

That would eliminate organic pathogens but not do anything to elemental pathogens. For any of you 'tards that don't understand, boiling will kill the bacteria but won't do anything to poisonous chemicals (lead, mercury, arsenic, etc).

I think so. I'm also interjecting "dimwit" for the 'tards that don't know that they are a 'tard. It's more comprehensible for the literature challenged readers.

What if I am fast on my way to becoming a 'tard because of all the fluoride and toxic minerals in my drinking water? Makes me glad for the new disclaimer.

Just don't drink the Kool Aide. That's phrase is from something that happened before your time.

I listened to the whole audio recording of that event and read about it fairly extensively for a few days. Pretty disturbing.

Meh, tap water….water from the garden hose….

That’s how we have always lived. I refuse to pay for tap water that’s now in a plastic bottle.

Tap water at home is well water, stuff at work is city water, strange taste but it’s what I drink all day at work.

We used to joke about selling water….life comes at you fast.

It's always funny to think the same water you get from the tap was once the water you pooped/peed into in your toilet.

They just treat it, remove the poop and pee etc... and shoot it back to your faucet.

Not trying to detract this thread, but I've read where you can take some cheap "fermented potato water" and run it through something like a Brita a few times it will taste like expensive "fermented potato water".

So all the water in pineapples was once in a vegetable, rendering its status as a pizza valid.

70% vegetable isn’t a true vegetable. Kind of like 10% juice isn’t juicy juice. Nice try though young padawan.
