Anyone dealing with carpal tunnel syndrome?

At 43, I am dealing with classic carpal tunnel symptoms (hands going numb, especially the middle and ring finger, but often whole hand) and tingling. Nights are ridiculous, my sleep is really interrupted by my hands going numb

Since resuming weightlifting in July after a 20 year absence, my symptoms have gotten much worse. I'm pretty sure this is a result of 20 years of typing research papers and having typing-intensive jobs.

I'll be visiting an Orthopedic specialist in a few weeks.

Can anyone offer any of their experiences here? If this tests true to be carpal tunnel, my two choices seem to be steroid shots or minor surgery. Anyone have success with the steroid shots?

If the surgery is recommended, how long did you recover before hitting the Barbells and dumbells again?

Never had carpal tunnel syndrome, but I did have a ganglionic cyst in my left radiocarpal joint that gave me symptoms very similar to carpal tunnel / arthritis. Had the surgery to get it removed, and I think it was probably a couple weeks in a little wrap/cast type thing, a few weeks of PT, and then pretty much eased into lifting as tolerated. Can't remember the exact timeline, but I don't think it was more than a couple months post-surgery that I was back to 100%.

I don't know much about carpal tunnel, so that little anecdote may not actually be helpful, but I figure they're both mildly invasive wrist operations so I wouldn't imagine the recovery times would be drastically different.

If your pinky finger is affected then it may not be Carpal Tunnel. Look up "median nerve distribution" on Google and you will see why.
