vax takers : how can I get calm enough to take my 2nd dose ( srs )

- passport bs is out where I live : need to prove you are double vaxed to even sit in a resteraunt

- got my first shot mid September. Always had a bit of anxiety surrounding things like this

The first shot i came into the clinic sat in the chair got my shot but then anxiety got the best of me :

Started feeling weak like I was going to pass out. Nurse had to bring a floor matt over so I could lay on the floor for a few mins ( srs ) and had to give me some apple juice to recover

How do I get mentally prepared for this 2nd shot so I don't have a repeat of the first shot

I went 3 times. First time alone, and I backed out. Second time with friends and colleagues, successful jab. Third time same as second. Social support is real.

Tunes, put your earbuds in and zone out, don't look. It will be all over in a few seconds and you will be supporting a scooby doo band aid. Good luck..

I got one of the first doeses for being a first responder, if you had a bad reaction the first time chances are the second won't be bad. It was the same way for me. The worst I got was cold like symptoms.

No anxiety at all, I am ex Military so I am no stranger to needles.

Dentist visits are another story for me though, I hate those fukers with a passion and a lot of anxiety is created leading up to the appointment. Lets just say, I have cancelled a few.

I hear ya. I said exactly the same thing (I hate those ****ers) to my girlfriend just before I tried to make an appointment this morning at a place with 4 receptionists. Some guy answers speaking fast French that I couldn't understand and then music comes on. I'm guessing they had some kind of emergency or something, but it was enough to make me hang up.

I remember when the drills were on a manual foot operated pedal pulley system and pain at the dentist was a given.

If you pass out or get light headed when getting poked with a needle, there are several things you can do to help. First, make sure you have eaten before you get the shot and also make sure that you are well hydrated. Those two things alone will help immensely.

The reason you pass out/feel lightheaded is because the anxiety triggers a vasovagal response which causes heart rate to slow and the large blood vessels of the legs to widen. This causes a drop in blood pressure which is why you pass out. Tell the doctor or nurse that you pass out when getting a shot so that they can have you lie down. This can help prevent blood from pooling in the legs. While you are lying down, cross your legs (increases cardiac output) and then flex them (prevents blood vessel dilation). If you do all of these things, you won't pass out.

^^ This. If you have extreme levels of anxiety, the doctor can prescribe a one-time dose of ***** or ****** which will make getting the shot a lot easier.

I get the fear of needles thing, but this one is only like a quarter inch long and so slim I never felt a thing. Side effects were something else but the shot is a joke.

It usually isn't the pain that causes the anxiety -- It is the fear of the injection itself, so even small painless needles cause the reaction. I don't know for sure, but I suspect it taps into the same psychological mechanisms that causes people to faint at the sight of blood etc.
