Some people are more concerned with self defense than bullseye competitions. Speed matters and 3 second shots are slow.

That’s why it’s not 25 yards and take as long as you please. It’s 25 yards with a time standard. If your draw is off, presentation, grip, trigger prep, or anything. You are going to fail. If you can do that at 25 yards then you can do it at closer distances faster.

It’s the 1 test that can capture all of the things needed for good shooting and expose it. That’s why people don’t like it. Because they can cover things up on drills at closer distances.

I’ve been gone since this morning. What are we arguing about today? Anyhoo…

It appears this new Wilson rifle has the potential to be a shooter.

Since this was the first time bench resting this rifle at 100 yards, I decided to use the hand loads I had worked up for the BRO with the .223 Wylde chamber. The shoulders are extended .003 to .004 longer than the chamber on the Wilson calls for, but I was sure it would eat them just fine.

After shooting a few to zero the scope on the new rifle, I shot four, 5 shot groups with the 52gr Berger Varmint bullet using 24.6 gr of XBR 8208 powder.

Wilson guaranteed the Protector to be sub MOA. With rounds loaded for another rifle, it averaged .657 for the four groups:

Upper left: .884
Upper right: .568
Lower left: .374
Lower right: .804





Over all, a good start. Now I’ll start creating loads specifically for this .556 chamber. I’m also going to be working with Vihtavuori powder.

If all I cared about was performance, I’d have 1 AR and a Glock. All you really need.

I’m a hobbyist though on top of that though so I like to collect/shoot different things.

I do think a Staccato helps over a striker fired gun though. The mechanical accuracy is better. And with the trigger being light and short it allows you to be fast easily as well as be a little lazier with accuracy. Something with a crappy trigger can be shot well but needs a little more focus and work. But if you can’t do the things well to put rounds on target accurately and at speed it doesn’t matter.

ehhh not necessarily...sht breaks. "Two is one" is a thing for a reason. Relying on one and only one handgun is not wise unless it's truly all you can afford at the time.

Backups are important. So make it 2 Glocks and 2 AR's as the minimum.

We get 6 seconds at 7 yards to get 3 shots off, 2 body and 1 head; that is CDCR standard to qualify, 8 seconds from the 15 yard. So 3 seconds per shot at 25 would be very generous.

Laser is already mounted. It's a dual, but I want to start practicing and training with the IR as well as they visible.

Our NOD options aren't as extensive here. I've been reading up for a while trying to decide on value.

I will absolutely be buying binos over 14s, but that doesn't mean the 14s are bad. They are certainly not as good as binos, but you get what you pay for. With 14s your situational awareness decreases quite a lot. When you're rolling with 20 other dudes that's not as big of an issue. LARPing around solo, I'd be concerned. Dropping $10k on binos isn't easy to swallow either, though.

Like I said, we slaughtered dudes at night with 14s. So much so that the Taliban and HIG completely ceased attacking at night. I'll never forget one of our runs ins with them at night. We had established a patrol base (a temporary, non-fortified position) for the night during a month long operation to clear a valley of AAF. I had just gotten off guard at one of the PB's positions when I heard over the radio that another position had spotted movement. As a team leader I went over to investigate to see what was going on and if it fell under wake up protocol. About 100 meters out, maybe more, was a group of four dudes walking casually towards our position. Our position was known to the enemy as we had been in contact heavily in the previous day, as well as IDF at the PB once we established it (circumstances kept us there rather than moving, but that's besides the point). Everyone in the valley was AAF and we essentially had PID on all MAMs. I woke up the PL and we grabbed a few of our 240 and Mk48/249 gunners and put them into position, with the machine gunners tracking these dudes with their IR lasers. Maybe 50-75 meters away, these guys began to move in more tactical manners, like crouching and bounding. I assume they had some weapons stored or were moving to store weapons. Either way, we didn't sit around to find out. We initiated on them with such a fat burst from the multiple machine guns that they were literally cut apart. We immediately displaced and moved back to our fighting positions in case this was the start of a larger attack. Turns out it wasn't and the only return fire we received was from a Hungarian soldier behind a ****ing DShK. Long story short, NODs with IR lasers are amazing and, if properly trained, you will own the ****ing night.

Also consider the cost of a quality ballistic helmet. Absolutely zero justification other than being broke to buy a bump helmet, unless your application for NODs is not in any type of tactical situation. You said the NODs were for just in case, not shooting hogs at night, so a ballistic helmet is mandatory and that's another ~$1.5k.
