    Protein with carbs

Hi. After a weight resistance workout, why is it recommended to have carbs with protein. Why not just eat protein to fuel the muscles? The carbs I sometimes don't want because it's adding on more weight that I don't need. Or does carbs play a certain role instead of just energy?

Carbs are helpful to refill glycogen stores. This can be important if you are doing two workouts within 8 hours of each other.

Otherwise, the old thought is that carbs help increase insulin levels which will decrease muscle protein breakdown to help shift things towards muscle protein synthesis post-workout. However, protein alone does this sufficiently, and it's not even clear to me this would be important to do as part of the repair response to resistance training involves breaking down damaged protein.

Thus, if you're not doing 2 workouts in 8 hours there is no need for carbs post-workout.

You're saying some things here that don't really make sense.

Protein doesn't 'FUEL' a muscle per se.. it provides a source of amino acids which will rebuild/grow muscle tissue.

Carbs don't add weight to your body unless you eat too many calories.
