I don't know how to feel right now. I was squatting and deadlifting 285 and 240, respectively, which were low weights for me, so I went through them pretty fast. But, then my right ear started ringing, got plugged up to the point where I can't hear, and I lost my sense of balance completely.
I had it checked out yesterday by 3 different doctors, a general practitioner and 2 specialist, and I got perilymph fistula (PLF). One of the specialist, an audiologist, said I didn't suffer any permanent hearing loss. And the other specialist, a head and neck surgeon said I should stop all physical activity, including running for a few weeks. She further said she recommended that I stop lifting weights, especially squatting and deadlifting, forever, or risk losing my hearing on my right ear.
I can't believe that I have to stop doing squats/deadlifts forever. I looked up PLF and it looks like it's caused by holding your breath during the movement, which I did. So, I'm going to talk to the doc again later this month about doing lower lifts, but breathing throughout the movement.
Anyone else been in this situation? Did you continue to lift?

I had a retinal issue when holding my breath during deadlifts. Fortunately I recovered, and don’t hold my breath anymore. I’m lifting heavier now and haven’t had a recurrence.
I would get a second expert opinion, and then if necessary, value my hearing more than lifting heavy. At age 64, I've exceeded all my prior PRs. Not “over the hill” yet. :)
