Is incline walking really a good calorie burning workout?

I walked this morning on the treadmill for an hour at a 12% grade and at 3.5 mph. My Garmin watch averaged my heart rate as 153 and said I burned around 600 cals. Im a 5"8 female and 136 pounds. Does that seem accurate? I was definitely sweating and my shirt was soaked after but it did not seem easy to me but not all that hard either. If this seems accurate then incline walking seems pretty equivalent to what I would burn running in an hour which is generally around 7 miles and I usually burn around 650-660 calories with that.

You have no actual way to know how many calories you are burning

But I actually love walking up hill for cardio, it feels lower impact on my knees and makes me sweat. Which if your heart rate is up and your sweating it’s good cardio.

No calculator can actually account for what exercise is best, go by how it challenges your body

Walking is great and very underrated for those that are looking to pack on or maintain muscle, and build their physique. It's low impact, low stress, and intensity isn't too high. It's unlikely to interfere with strength training performance or recovery. Only downside is it can be boring and takes up more time. But that can be time used wisely. I'll walk on be on the phone if I'm outdoors, get work done on my phone if I'm indoors, or listen to a podcast.

podcast walks and bike rides are so much fun. it's just relaxing to listen to something like iron culture while doing low impact cardio

I consider walking a bonus and don't worry about potential calories i may of burned while doing it when figuring out my calorie intake for the day.

that said, I walk daily or try to because it does help a little with the weight loss.

thats probably close. A good rough rule of thumb is 100 calories burned per mile

thats generally what I go with. Do you think incline affects it much? Or when one holds on to the machine with their arms?

It may however people of different weights and different levels of fitness also affect the numbers either up or down so it's all just an estimate. There is no way to really get accurate.

Holding on to the hand rails doesn’t effect calories too much i don’t think as long as your legs are lifting your body. It’s probably possible to exploit leaning weight differentials pretty easily though.

    600 sounds about right.

In college I would do some of my reading assignments walking along the lake. That was nice and I never had trouble keeping my path or avoiding people.
