When I was young, I’d have said “skull crushers “ or “dips “ or “close grip bench”….but when you consider keeping elbows healthy and pain free? It’s pushdowns 100%

The single best movement is the one you squeeze the most out of every bit of the movement, with perfect form, no more than 3 sets of 10 reps, and to absolute failure plus 2 reps.

This works amazingly well when you are severely constipated, actually.

I think close grip bench press is right up there. But I don't think there's one exercise.. I think its a combination of a few.

Dips, if you have bars with narrow width available, two chairs if not. I don't think I ever got as good of a contraction from other tricep exercises as I did with dips, but you do need perfect form to keep from not just using and progressing with them, but to keep from getting injured in a rather serious way. If using close grip benchpress, you might try switching to an underhand grip(maybe start lighter using these and work your way up) - that really brings some nice tricep involvement in. As far as the isolations go, despite popular opinion on them being useless, I always felt a strong tension in the tris using kickbacks, and at no point did I ever get elbow pain using them. I currently don't use them at all and stick with dips and overhead extensions, but damn I can really feel those kickbacks. Not much opportunity to overload with em, but they feel good to me.

Kickbacks might be one of the most underrated Tricep isolations ever. I second that.

    What I like:
    - close grip bench press
    - dumbell skullcrushers on a decline bench
    - dumbell kneeling tricep kickbacks
    - overhead cable extensions (rope, bar, single arm)

    What I hate:
    - seated dumbell overhead extension with both arms - just find it weird
    - barbell skullcrushers - because of the elbow pain

    Hate-like relationship:
    - close grip cable press (sometimes) - timestamped - https://youtu.be/FP92hoIhs5c?t=90
    - cable pushdowns

But OP wants the SINGLE BEST ONE EXERCISE, so I cannot decide.
I will need some reflection, some meditation, some peace of mind for this.
I will come back in 5 years or so with an answer.

They cramp the tris…no doubt. Essentially they are similar in effect to what leg ext do to quads.
