Will my TDEE go down if I stop all exercise/training?

Based on the body of evidence, I'm pretty sure I can maintain current body comp while continuing to eat 3000-3500 calories if I just sit on my azz all day.

    Can someone confirm?

I haven't found any studies disproving this, but have seen many on here that suggest I can keep doing what I'm doing.

Yes based on what you have told us before about how your TDEE responds to exercise, it will definitely go down.

Your body will sense that you are trying to trick its attempts at down regulation and will then up regulate to get back at you so you may need to up your calories.

I have a massively active job. Obviously this has no effect on the fact I eat 5000 calories a day just to maintain my weight. If I quit my job tomorrow and decided to sit at home all day then I could still eat 5000 calories without getting fat which is great to know

Yea, my TDEE was 5k a few years ago and I would literally eat bowls of melted pb, honey, and granola to hit my cals. I used to think I needed to eat that much because I was extremely active back then, but now that so many studies have awared me that physical activity has nothing to do with it, I wonder why my body suddenly decided it needed over 1k less calories when I stopped doing so much. I must've blown out my thyroid.

What did you actually do to be so active? I ate that much as a teenager and stayed lean, but I was growing, worked a part time job that had me sweating and moving around constantly, and ran 5 miles a few times a week, so, pretty active. But as a grown adult sitting down for most of the day, how do you reach that level?

*Of course, you don't necessarily have to be sitting down most of the time, but I'm speaking to the norm.

I was walking dogs in NYC, doing intense Muay Thai workouts 2-3x per week (about 1.5 hours each), and lifting once or twice per week. To be fair, I've always had a far higher TDEE than the calculators estimate. Right now I maintain on an average of around 3.5k-3.8K cals per day, & I'm not insanely active or anything.

I'm currently around 160 & bulking, eating around 4k to gain. When I did that job and those workouts, I was barely maintaining at a little over 5k. It was brutal eating that much tbh. My mom has a similarly outsized TDEE. I'm 6 foot with an extremely small frame btw (extremely narrow wrists, ankles, bones).

Wow, nice! My maintenance seems to be about 3.5K but I'm still weighing 235ish, so that's probably to be expected.

When I was 21 I did a sparring martial art for several months and those could be brutally exhausting... HEMA with steel swords. Fractured my arm and walked away with bruises most times.

You and Adam convinced me on the walking thing, though. At first I thought that was kind of ridiculous, that you could significantly increase caloric burn just from walking, but then I started walking my lunch breaks and just adding it in more, and even at a moderate calorie allowance the weight seemed to be falling off. More useful knowledge from the forum!

Man I’d love to have that TDEE.

Are you also maintaining 10-12% BF year round like Adam?

Oh man I love it so much but sparring's so brutal!! I've been taking a break for awhile cuz the wear-and-tear on my body is unreal.

And yea I've even been able to gain or lose weight simply by adding or subtracting a mile or 2 from my daily walks. Right now as I'm trying to gain, I've actually consistently been able to put on size by just bringing my walking down and making no dietary changes whatsoever. Walking, at least for me, makes a massive difference.

Yes, though I'm intending to bulk for quite awhile to just gain strength, and Idc really what bf% I end up at. I'm not really concerned with aesthetics at all. I ate like complete chit as a kid. I was malnourished and had fast food, cookies, donuts, and ice cream for every meal. I still don't know if I've ever gotten above 13-15% bf in my life, beyond maybe having baby fat as a toddler Ig. As of now, I'd like to see how far I can take my strength gains.

Interesting, I have probably never been below 17-18% BF lol.

I am actually finding it easier to lean out further by bulking instead of cutting... using dat dere TommyW leangains approach

Or you just look leaner even if you're gaining some fat in absolute terms, per adding muscle.

Yea, I have no interest in ever cutting, but it's been years since I was over 12% bf despite the fact that I've gained a massive amount of weight since my eating disorder (over 40 lbs). I think there may be a "body fat set point" more than there is a "bodyweight set point".

Maybe but any fat gain goes straight to my stomach and I am tracking that and dieting off any waist gain.

You must have been at the brink of death almost?

I am unsure about the set point thing. I will know when I cut down to 174-175 again and see how it feels. My hope is that 15% will feel good at a higher weight, I would never be able to feel good maintaining anything below 175.

Or at the very least, I hope 17% at 185 lbs looks much better than at 175...
