And shame on you for negging Supramax on what could be the only possible explanation of Mary getting pregnant if it wasn't from Joseph. Mary was in fact a cheating 13 year old little girl. By law she should've been stoned on her father's doorstep. Or do you also believe the gospel of James, Jesus's older brother, which even goes so far as to say that Mary's hymen was intact even after the birth of Jesus and his twin brother Didymos Judas Thomas?

It's estimated that there are 2 trillion galaxies, each possibly containing 100 billion solar systems in this big bang scenario that we call 'the universe' and which evidently is one of an infinite number of big bangs that have been happening for eternity. These guys believe that someone created that and came to Earth to get Mary pregnant with the saviour of mankind. Do you actually think you can talk logic with these guys?

Actually the Roman god Saturn and the pagan festival of Saturnalia, which celebrated the winter solstice, is the reason for the season. Second and third century christians decided to steal this holiday for their own, they kind of had a history of stealing much older stories/traditions and attributing them to their god.

Or is it just Christians? Otherwise, I hope life is treating you well.
Come on now, admit it. The Joseph being a cuckold thing is hilarious. Like Sam Kinison's take on there's no way Jesus was ever married. What wife would've bought the resurrection story...a guy leaves the house on a Friday afternoon with 12 other guys and doesn't show back up until Monday. So where have you been savior?
Blasphemy is in the eye of the beholder, as the old saying goes one man's orthodoxy is another man's heterodoxy. Jesus would've considered the book of John and any of Paul's writings blasphemous. Jesus was a jew, he didn't think he was god. He simply thought that god was going to defeat evil (the Romans) and make him the king of Israel. He was dead wrong on that one!

I pretty much make fun of all religions or any groups of people that eschew science, I also make fun of people who don't know the difference between imply and infer.

I hope life is treating you well also and that you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are gearing up for a prosperous New Year!

I'm 56 and I've been an atheist since I was old enough to figure out it's all BS, around the same time I figured out there was no Santa Claus. I've never said a prayer that I can remember, I'd have nothing to pray to. If I have a problem I fix it. If someone else has a problem, I'll try to help them. If I'm sick I'll go to the doctor, if someone else is sick I'll take them to the doctor if needed. If someone is dying I'll try to comfort them and the loved ones around them. Honestly for me death is the only time being an atheist sucks. Everyone else gets to say things like the deceased will be in heaven with their loved ones or I'll see you again soon. Saying I'll be decomposing and enriching the soil with you one day so just doesn't sound that comforting.

When you die, you won't be worried about what people are saying at your funeral. I appreciate your honesty if you've never said a prayer. Perhaps one day you will. Maybe when death comes knocking. Perhaps just a, "God if you're real, show me" kind of prayer? Who knows. Regardless, I have said a prayer on your behalf today. Merry Christmas.

Thanks for taking the time to include me in your prayers, I appreciate it. Normally I'd say something snarky, but you truly seem sincere, so I do appreciate it. I'll be the first to admin that I don't know one way or the other with 100% certainty, so any extra help thrown my way just in case is never a bad thing. Merry Christmas to you too.

I go with Bart Ehrman's description of himself. I'm an agnostic atheist. Agnostic at its earliest definition simply meant without knowledge. I don't believe there's a god so I consider myself an atheist, but I don't know for sure. Now if proof to the contrary were to present itself then you're damn skippy I'll believe. I'm a stubborn opinionated a$$hole but I'm not stupid.

I go with the "I don't know AND NEITHER DO YOU!!! (because a first cause cannot be known)" definition. I say first cause or 'creator' is false, anyways, because it implies duality.

I agree 100% on that take! I haven't seen any good proof yet of a god, but if some shows I'll be open to hearing or seeing it. I always like when people say you need proof of a god? just look around. My response is always, yes, just go to a children's cancer ward and look around, tell me what god would do that.

Are there any 'Creator God' belief religions that don't include personal continuity after the death of the body?

I'm assuming you mean life after death or reincarnation by personal continuity after death.
I don't consider buddhism to be a religion, more of a philosophy. I don't know a whole lot about Middle Eastern or Asian religions, so I can't speak too much about them. My understanding is that early, pre-Hellenistic judaism didn't believe in any afterlife. When you die the soul leaves your body.

LOL 12 years ago I came to bodybuiling.com to find out some pointers about setting up my home gym. Here I am now discussing pre-Hellenistic judaism. There have been some good discussions in this thread and the one for friendly christian atheist discussions.

Yeah, life after death as commonly understood, anyways. You seem to be quite knowledgeable about Christianity, so I figured you might be able to edify me with regard to that question. To reiterate, I wondered if there were any creator god religions with no afterlife. I don't know if there's a creator in pre-Hellenistic judaism.
I'm pretty sure that Siddhartha Gautama considered first cause an imponderable.

Hi thedickus, one thing has puzzled me about people who have invested a great deal of time studying Bible/religions/theology who don't believe in God.

I realise everyone's different so you can't speak for them, but I'm genuinely baffled. Personally if I didn't have faith in the Bible there's no way I'd spend time studying it, I'd see it as a waste of my time. (Yes I've always been a poor student)

In your case... why have you studied it in such depth and engage so enthusiastically and learnedly on it, if it's something you don't believe?

What's sad is the ridiculous nonsense you believe, because you're so afraid of being nothing.

They were scared to do so. They felt people would look down on them. I've never had that issue, I always felt I was sufficiently "armed" to state my case.

I had a much longer reply than this, but for some reason it won't let me post it. Not sure why, but here's the crux of it:
Tom, I've always felt that if you're not going to believe in something that could affect you for eternity, you should know exactly what it is that you don't believe in. I also feel that you should know exactly what it is that you do believe in, and more importantly where those beliefs came from.
