    skinny fat?

So I’m really not sure if I should continue my current deficit I’m doing. I feel like im skinny fat, any thoughts?
I’m between continuing my deficit or to start eating slightly over maintenance to build muscle.
Im just waiting for the abs to pop up but it’s being some time in the deficit and I’m no longer sure if I should continue.

My main objective is to be lean and muscular ( around 8% bodyfat )

    Stats:
    Age: 20
    Height: 5ft 10.5” (179cm)
    Weight: 149 lbs
BodyFat: ? (Machine at the gym says 8% since it’s just my arms and legs are skinny but belly, chest and back are obviously over 15%)
    Mantainance: 2550~ with my activity
    Eating : 2200 cals / 150g protein
Workout: 5 times per week - 2 times each upper body muscle w/ swimming cardio after. Just started 3 months ago, I was on the deficit for around 10 months since I was overweight. Not sure if it matters but just letting know

    Much appreciated for the replies!

    Edit:
Here is my 5 days workout

    Workout:
    Monday
    Chest/tricep
    Shoulders

    Tuesday
    Back
    Biceps

    Wednesday
    Legs
    Traps (each 2 weeks)
    Forearm (each 2 weeks)
    Abs

    Thursday
    Shoulders
    Chest/triceps

    Friday
    Calves
    Biceps
    Back

    Saturday
    Abs

It doesn't matter what you call it, but I'd call it untrained more than skinny fat. I wouldn't cut at 5-10, 145 lbs. Maintenance or slight surplus is fine.

Don't make a muscular 8% your main objective at this stage, you'll end up spinning your wheels.

Get on a proper workout program, that'll be more important than figuring out your bf% or seeing your abs. 2x each upper body muscle doesn't mean anything.

Listing body parts doesn't tell us anything about your program.

But if I’m still fat shouldn’t be better to get a nice bodyfat% and start from there my gains with slightly over maintenance?

You are of same attitude as I always fell into. It’s intimidating to push up when you aren’t comfortable with body fat. But to gain muscle it is all part and parcel of the process. There are alot of knowledgable folks on here. Take what advice they give

You look like you may want to recomp. Just eat at maintenance and stay dedicated to lifting. As long as your lifts keep going up over time, you're on the right track.

It's a gradual process, but you will increase your muscle mass and you will wear the fat better. At that point, you may want to look into cutting excess fat.

This, or even a small surplus. No reason to cut now. For those that are skinny fat, a recomp is often best. And it's doable for this group since they're new to lifting, almost all the time. Or maybe not even new to lifting, but have never trained or eaten properly. So they still have those initial gains to take advantage of.

You have nothing to cut to and your BF is low enough for your frame to go into a slight surplus while training on a proven program and add muscle.
If you don't get what you want you didn't want it bad enough

Amen to that. In the OP's position at the age of 20 I would eat at a surplus (around 3,000 cals according to his figures, and sounds about right) and lift like crazy. Maybe consider a cut after like 2 or 3 years? People (including myself) always chase abs at the expense of every other muscle! When you look at people with strong blocky abs, everything else is always strong and blocky too!

I don't know... I'm not a pro but I'm in the same position, and I would cut another 5 pounds, at least. You can do it quickly, and from your pics, you don't look like you're going to look sickly in clothes if you do. If you eat in a surplus, my money is on you're going to add fat - from everything I understand, there's no reason to add that fat right now while you can cut and still make small gains. Any more fat on you is still more than your (probably) comfortable with.
