I bought my house last year and last year I paid the property tax based the assessed value before the sale. It's normal for the county to play catch up and send a supplemental bill a later date.

The previous owner had a very low property tax bill because of Prop 13 and they owned the house since the 60's.

This is one of the costs people who crow about home ownership don't factor in. $1000 a month tax bill on top of mortgage.

So many people just look at the mortgage and think it's so cheap. Meanwhile put in property taxes, utilities and maintenance - including major repairs every 5 years (which many people don't budget for) and the monthly cost goes way up.

If I owned the house I currently live in it would cost me minimum $1000 a month more than my rent.
