So I ordered a 14k 9mm Cuban link chain and tuned out to be 7k but won’t be ready until September since it’s being hand made and jeweler has a lot of chains to make before mine.
I already put down 1500 and I’m having a guilt a few weeks later cause now I’d rather have the 7k into savings or invest in something else. I think I will be canceling this but the thing is I will only get back half of my deposit which is 750.
Would you guys go with the chain or cancel it and chalk up the 750 loss?

I'm giga cringing at someone even fathoming dropping $7,000 on 14k gold. That's a lot of necklace that's barely even considered gold.
18k minimum or you peacocking/frauding hard, and the fact that you're actually going to miss those 7bands further proves that point.
I kiiiiinda see going with 14k gold if you're a regular joe shmoe buying an engagement ring, and you want most of your budget going to the diamond rather than the band, but trying to flex with $7,000 worth of 14k gold is pure fukery. Do yourself a favor and get you a friend from the middle east so they can set you straight.DCA'ing FXS since Sept2022

Bruh why are you financing jewelry?
I would not be buying 7k jewelry unless it was not a big deal to pay the full price.
Not sure your interest on the loan, but it seems like a bad idea if you can't afford the whole thing.
It's only worthwhile as an investment if you can resell at a profit, but it's more a thing people buy in full for looks.
Seems like you're phucked both ways because you can't get the full deposit back.Beans. Cleans. Gasoline.

He didn't say anything about financing though if i understood correctly, he just put the deposit down to have it made. To my previous point, if it's 18k or 22k gold with no stupid custom pendants added, and just a gold necklace with a somewhat common link design (like a cuban link)... then it's little different than going to a bullion precious metal provider and buying a few ounces of gold.
If he IS financing it though... 14k gold no less... jesus fuking christ.DCA'ing FXS since Sept2022

Yeah jewelers make a serious markup from raw materials. Gold plating can cost $10 or less but add thousands in value to something.
Dealers alone put like a 400% markup or more from wholesalers, and the wholesaler is marking it up considerably from the jeweler.
The jeweler is also charging 400% from the raw material cost, but they use their tools/skills to add that value.
14kt is only 58% gold, it is the lowest common grade. Cuban links are a very popular work these days thanks to pop culture and rappers and all that, so the jeweler can charge a high price.
Maybe OP could profit way on down the line, maybe. It's not worth the risk if you aren't just buying it for yourself anyways and have the cash to spare full price.Beans. Cleans. Gasoline.

If you walk into "jewelry store" you are absolutely going to get fuked. By the time it hits their display cases its been marked up by 2 or 3 middle men.
I used to date a woman from Amman Jordan a few years back and she plugged me into that entire industry so I know better. That said, op did say the guy he is buying from is making the chain, which leads me to believe there's fewer middle men involved than a big box jewelry store. I have a few 18k and 22k pieces I wear in rare beach/vacation situations but they're smaller accent pieces and they didn't cost me more than $3500 (for 22k). Again... $7,000 of 14k gold???? wtf is that man doing.DCA'ing FXS since Sept2022

Yeah does seem pretty ridiculous, maybe because it's made to order? No idea.
The jewelry industry is crazy, it works the same way as the art dealing industry. It is subjectively priced as it is a work of art.
Billionaires go to Christie's and Sotheby's and drop hundreds of millions on this stuff at a time, then resell it for millions in profit.Beans. Cleans. Gasoline.

Idk what is about jewelry that gets everyone so crazy about the business of it lol.
I used to work in the jewelry business, and items are not “marked up 400% every step of the way”. There’s costs and materials, costs of labor to make a piece, costs to run the business, and costs for marketing and advertising LIKE EVERY OTHER BUSINESS.
Are you mad at The Gap because they pay 10 cents for some cotton, pay a sweatshop kid another 10 cents a day to to sow it into a shirt, but get this… charge you $12 for. Tshirt!!!
What that’s not fair! It’s only ten cents worth of cotton in there!!!!
Idk why some dudes are flabbergasted that people want to make a profit when it comes to jewelry. They think the price of a finished piece should be 5-10% above the raw material costs. It’s funny because these are the guys that get taken for a ride and always buy some misrepresented crap because they keep looking for the best “deal”
