    What's wrong with CrossFit?

Whenever it's mentioned on these forums, it tends to be cast in a negative light.

I'm not personally interested in formally doing it or modelling my training after it, but does it really warrant so much disapproval?

While I can't see how it would be ideal for hypertrophy, in terms of athleticism and acute strength training with an interesting hybrid mentality, I don't see what's so wrong with it in general.

Nothing wrong with it if it suits one's goals, but CF tends to come up when people post routines that look like CF and ask if it's optimal for muscle gains. Plus, many people into CF tend to do routines that are more akin to weight loss than strength/conditioning.

Nothing - if you want to compete at the Crossfit games for example. In terms of how it helps with other sports I couldn't say but I suspect the SAID principle means it will generally be inferior to actually doing that sport.

I think people who do it often have unclear goals - they really want body composition improvements but say things like they want to look "lean and toned" and not like a "huge bodybuilder". It's the same argument people that do callisthenics sometimes use - when actually it's a simple product of ANY kind of resistance training plus correct dietary control that will achieve the same thing. Probably more efficiently using a conventional free weights routine...

A big issue is that technique gets sacrificed for reps. Last I looked into this there was a considerably higher injury rate with CrossFit than other resistance training disciplines.

Random 'wods' pulled out of someone's ass.

Ultra technical explosive Movements programmed very much not how they should NOT be. Ultra high rep for b time... Lul

    Gimpy kipping of everything..

Now doing well programmed met cons?
That's a totally different animal. Excellent..

Crossfit is excellent for two things...
    1. Getting people active. This is better than not.
2.Getting people their foot in the door with weighrd/bars and feeding the weightlifting, powerlifting and strongman communities.

CF seems to me like an overzealous cult of sorts. When you're in, you sell your soul to fake enthusiasm and over-the-top motivation. Just my impression. The real risks of injury are one of the more serious drawbacks.

Came in to say something like this. Also some of the lifts are very technically challenging especially for a new lifter, yet they encourage you to jump right in and start doing them for high reps against a stopwatch. That's absolutely nuts and just a recipe to seriously injure if not outright cripple people.

Well, the only wrong thing with CrossFit is that, once you start doing it, you have to tell your parents that you're gay...

but the good side is that crossfit teaches you how to correctly have incorrect form.

Rant about sports in my broken English

Except mma/boxing/kickboxing, I don't watch sports. Played soccer and watched soccer as a teen, but I find it very boring right now. When I tried to understand baseball, I was like "and people watch this without falling asleep? Okaaay!".

But If I were to be obliged to watch something else right now, it would probably be crossfit. Especially compared with:

    - bodybuilding - watching extremely huge bloated asymmetrical oily Mr Olympia guys in tangas? no thanks! this 'sport' died at Arnold, when they used to wear shorts, not women underwear. Yes, aware of the fact there are lower classes and natural bb, but this is my rant and Olympia guys are the creme de la creme or something like this. And don't make me mention the Olympia women. Holly ****ing **** jesus christ our lord and savier, please have mercy!

    - powerlifting - watching some guys, either very fat or lower classes, try to bench with a ridiculous arch and the widest grip ever, just to move a bar for a few inches. Or those guys made for deadlits, like Dalton LaCoe, God help us! Is it sumo or conventional? Doesn't matteeeer! Was it a lockout??? Doesn't matteeeer! He beat the record with 250 grams, yaaaaay, you go girl!

    - weightlifting - same as powerlifing, weirder outfit.

    - strongman - better than the first three, but watching some roided genetic freaks with bad tats isn't my idea of fun

At least the CrossFitters look 'in shape'; i'll rather look like Rich Froning anyday than Coleman or Eddie Shaw. Also, those competitions look more entertaining, more speedy, more fun, than watching men in tangas or men with their head exploding while trying to move a bar for 3 inches.

Doing it? No! I find it a mess for the joints!

    This ^^^^^^.

Go to a Crossfit gym and watch a few people trying to get max reps on the WOD. You will be appalled at the horrible form. The idea that form comes before weight and reps is completely foreign to them.

Pat McNamara (look him up, he's awesome) described it best. Crossfit is outcome based training - will I succeed or will I fail at this workout? It's good for training lots of raw recruits but not for advanced training. What we should look at (and what many top Crossfit athletes actually do if you really look at their training) is performance based training. Focus on the task at hand and improving that task - how can I get better vs just a pass/fail mentality. The top Crossfit folks don't just do the daily WOD and call it a day.

Which type of lifting do you enjoy, Jax? These descriptions of each sound pretty negative.

Oly weightlifting has the most class, I'd say, at least on the platform. Strongman is cool but over-hyped sometimes, and some PL feds get carried away with the show. Oly is smooth and professional.

Well, it is a rant, not many positive things in a rant.
I don't enjoy watching those sports.
I enjoy lifting, as a hobby, though.
