Never done much barbell bench-pressing actually. More of a dumbbell guy. But I did some, pretty regularly for periods, not like I'm a novice.
Had a heart procedure in January and didn't do any exercise at all for three months. Started back at Planet Fitness in April, doing the 75 lb dumbbells (the heaviest there) for sets up to 30 reps.
Returned to the real gym a few weeks ago and found I hadn't lost much strength. Maybe had gotten stronger. My wife went with me this week so I had a spotter. Did some sets of 3 with 275 on Monday and didn't need any help.
Today I was just going to do dumbbells for bench (real gym goes up to 125), but all the benches by the dumbbells were taken, so I went the racks with my wife. Did 275 and felt okay so I thought I'd try 300. Felt a bit silly putting the 2.5 lb plates on there to make it an even 300 but that's like a milestone. Had my wife standing by, but 300 went up pretty easy and I didn't need help. Thought what the heck, I'll try 3 plates, probably won't get it, but it's worth a try. Put 3 plates on, unracked it, benched it smooth, and reracked without my wife even having to touch it. Probably could have done more but called it good.
Pretty jazzed about it.
The guys next to us on Monday were warming up with fast reps of 3 plates, so I know there are guys who do a whole lot more, but this was good for me.
I'm still not running (ran a lot until the heart stuff the past 2 years), but I did restart biking and want to do some 100 mile rides this summer, so probably want to lose weight and not be concerned about strength the rest of the summer, so maybe this is the last time I do it, but pretty pleased with myself to get 3 plates.

Gabbar Dude, that's awesome! I hope whatever you got done to your heart is resolved and wont be an issue going forward.
As for the previous comments, I reckon they just messing with u cuz there was no video to back up your claim. Based on your previous posts, your word is good enough for me, for what it's worth.

Thanks. I guess it didn't occur to me to video it in case I need to prove it to somebody on the internet.
Plus, last time I showed a photo of my gym y'all told me it sucked because the bumper plates were the wrong color.
And you'd be able to see how fat I am.
And my wife's hotness would distract you.

I'm very inexperienced when it comes to working out although I have done my research nothing has come close to what I've learned over this weekend. I googled " Top Books On Body Building" like a lot of us have and when I tell you the amount of information in this book is priceless, specially when my body doesn't heal as fast as it used to when I was younger. I also forgot to mention that the audio version of the book is free. Some people on this forum might have read it and perhaps can comment. Here is a link if anyone is interested amzn.to/3vaStB2

I've never done cables or flys. Probably why I'm a big guy but it's taken me until age 59 to do 3 plates. I just never worked on it very hard.
My plan on how to progress:
1. Dink around at it off and on for years.
2. Do no exercise at all for 3 months.
3. Do light dumbbells for a month or two.
4. Start trying for a couple weeks.

6'4", but hardly a gifted athlete. Have always had weak shoulders. In that photo from 4 years ago I'm deadlifting something in the mid 300s I think. Big bumper plates make it look better. Haven't deadlifted in a couple years. My hips are so stiff now I'm almost disabled.
As I casually manage to mention a hundred times, my son is a freak and was a D1 All American in the decathlon at 6-6, 230. Thanks for remembering. My younger daughters are college swimmers who each set school records this year, but don't have their brother's freak track talent.
