Passing Open Guard Question for my Jiu Jitsu Peeps!

I have a lot of trouble passing a certain type of guard player and would love some advice! (no gi)

Passing Blue/White belt guards has never been a major issue for me. My go to has been Torreando, Knee cut passing, or the kickback/long step pass.

Recently started playing around with over-under passing but against Purples/Browns Im getting either triangles or my back taken, or I end up in wild scrambles which sucks.

My issue comes when the opponent has very active legs open guard, he is circling and pushing, and sticking them inside for butterfly hooks, or de-la-riva etc. I cant quit plant on his legs to keep his body stable and establish a pass since my opponent is not static. Then When I come in the opponent gets a butterfly sticky hook and either begins to elevate, grab one of my legs, or tries to go to my back.

One thing that has "Almost" worked for me, is brute forcing a knee cut and just floating on top of the opponent. But I try to stay away from these type of passes since its a wild scramble.

Anyone have any tips for dealing with this type of scenario? What is your favorate method for passing? How are you dealing when an opponent instead of knee-shield gets his foot inside and plays from half butterfly?

Not to get triangled when you try the over under pass grab/control his shin at the very start brah (same side) as you are about to shoot. Push it down a bit as you shoot. Then after you shot you gotta stay snug, elbow in as you hug his leg with the other arm, head to the side, there is no way the guy will triangle you that way.

I can’t stand those kinds of things thou, so tiring. I just stand over the opponent and keep messing about with his legs, pushing them around side to side, and front and back, waiting until I see an opening where I just step in and land in half guard. Whites and even blues will often be less alert and couple of days ago I got mount right from there, because dude thought I would be settling for half guard LOL,

That's part of the game. You're beginning to deal with the upper echelon of BJJ players around purple. They should be a handful. Browns are one step short of mastery.

I don't over/under pass. I either stack pass, or simply try to get to half guard. Half guard is the position to pass then. Still working on not getting swept and having a better center of gravity from half, but this is the easiest way for me to control my opponent.

Only a blue belt here FWIW. Take it with a grain of salt.

I haven't done jitz in a long time but i remember when rolling with purple belts, I wouldn't be able to break their grip due to fitness and strength, and get triangled.

On the bottom, they would just flatten me out, control my neck and slide thru my guard and head arm choke me.

I would say, just keep on going on with it. It is part of the struggle when you roll with higher belts.

body lock passing is all the rage rn but I prefer to knee cut style of passing

purple and above have crazy gaurds and its very difficult to pass them start working on attacking the legs as a plan b

Absolutely wrong. There are a lot of grip changes that are required for no gi vs gi, that make almost all moves translate perfectly fine. Controlling the hips with grips is the solution for over unders.

I think the over under pass is a bit easier with the GI.

No Gi, there is some slippage, also since NO-GI is generally dynamic and faster pace, when you dive in for an over-under sometimes it results in a wild scramble or a moment where you get clipped in the face by a knee or something.

Yeah Lachlan has good info on the body lock passes. I tend to lift the knee up that’s on the ground and get them squared up from open guard with one hand in the stomach one in the knee. Then you can work on your feet to cut, slice, shove the knee to half guard etc.

Body lock works really well but if you fail you end up in the closed guard and I hate that. Pressure passing from half is where it’s at
