Extremely blood rush to the head and dizziness

Last night at the gym I wanted to do 3 sets of 20 reps on leg press with 5 plates per side, nothing new done this before, on my second set at my 19th rep I felt blood rush to the top of my head from the back of my neck and caught an instant head rush headache and became very dizzy.

After several minutes the pain went away and I felt somewhat normal and continued my workout, did not do my last set of 20 reps but went on to do leg curls, reverse leg curls and machine leg press and felt OK, but not entirely myself.

This morning I still feel a slight headache but not too bad, anyone ever felt anything like this?

I used to get this when doing heavy deads. Like I would set the bar down after the last rep and almost fall over. Had to sit down with my head down. Not sure if I was holding my breath too long or maybe squeezing my diaphragm too tight. May be a vasovagal reaction. Look it up.

No, I definitely was not holding my breath. If it happens again I will check it, just never ever had this happen to me before.

Rest, Johnny. I wonder if it might be a just an after-effect of your contracting Covid. Your body may still be adjusting while also you are pushing it pretty hard.

yeah, guess (but that's all it is) is that you're pushing pretty hard and it's still not that far out from COVID compromising your overall health. Go easy, ensure you get enough rest. You're doing well! If it recurs I agree I'd at least call your doc.

It’s called vasovagal syncope. Sounds like you were pre-syncope, meaning you didn’t out right pass out. This is due to compression in the intraabdominal area on your 10th cranial nerve as it courses down to your peritoneum. Some people are more susceptible to this.

Your best bet is to stop holding your ****ing breath when you’re doing reps just like someone was supposed to teach you when you first started lifting heavy weights. If it keeps happening have your family physician take a look, but he’ll likely say the same thing I did.
You have my word as a Schons.

So if we assume your breathing was 100%, then the only question is what cuts off blood flow to the head and leaves you dizzy after exertion? 20 reps of anything is no joke!
Tensing your neck and crazy high bp, a mask, residual covid junk in your lungs?

I think we all have pushed to that point but it just goes away and we don't wake up with it the day after.
There is an unspoken thing, we are iron brothers and sisters, we are to support each other and...It is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in the iron game!

Look up “vagal maneuver”. That’s what you’re doing. Happens to a lot of heavy lifters. You don’t even know it; subconscious.

Since I always record my workouts I have the two videos

Here is my first set of 20, I crop this one so you don't see the set up and everything.

Here is the 2nd set where I could not complete the whole set only got 19 - I didn't crop this one so you can see how I hold the back of my head when I felt the pain.

I took it off for a breather, but they frown upon you having it off

Ok I could hear you breathing so you weren't holding your breath. Unless you did it for a couple reps without realizing. Hard to say what happened at this point then.

I did a quick web search and found this. It might be what you experienced.

I see..yeah I think about it too like while doing bench press someone coming up telling me to put on mask in middle of rep. I try to find a quiet corner away from people since I can't workout with the mask on. I can't breathe with that thing on.

    It is the fkng mask!!
I get headaches every time i leave the gym now because of the lack of O2 and that never ever happened before.
I have tried to do what i normally do( workouts) but the feeling of being smothered, the inability to breath deeply and the feeling of "sucking wind" upon completion of the set has caused me to modify everything the past 15 months.
I am 90% confident that in my case, it is all due to this.

That wasn’t meant to be political really. I figured since you laughed at his findings (doubt you had a stroke). I thought he was BSing and you was ok with it and added my own BS because Google and Microsoft and all.......

Anyway my common sense thinks those masks are doing bad things but professor Gabber say otherwise?

I’ve had headaches the next day from 20 rep squat from raising my head, but never dizzy, the masks will cause dizziness cause you ain’t getting proper air.......

And unfortunately masks seem to be political BS, it sucks, it really does, if I had kids, I’d most likely go on a rampage if they was forced to wear them in gym or sports, it is utter stupidity!!!!

I actually just started back at my gym and wearing the mask absolutely sucks. The girl working the desk told me I can pull it down under my nose but not under my chin. lol That's what I do while I'm doing a set or sitting between sets. If I get up to walk I just pull it back over my nose.
This silly chit has got to end already.

Hopefully it's just something like that and doesn't happen again. There have been numerous times I've left the gym with a headache or feeling like crap and a couple hours later I was fine. Not something I like dealing with.

I am really sick of wearing a mask in the gym. It gets soaked with sweat, always needs adjusting and I'm sure it's not good for your skin. I do the half mask (below the nose) for heavy sets.
Don't put that on me Ricky Bobby, don't you ever put that on me.

I frequently move it down, take large deep breaths and put it back on after a heavy set.

I seldom have my mask on any where where it's covering my nose and especially in the gym...

I think we're getting closer and closer to the point where masks are becoming sort of a token gesture in more and more places...

At 6 am there's next to no staff around anyways, so it's not a big deal or at least not as big of deal as I thought it was gonna be..

    Best solution.
