I do seated OHP with the barbell since my ceiling upstairs isn't too tall. I too get this really weird sensation when doing only OHP. I get light headed and then it's like I can't feel anything but I can power through the lift with no effort. It's really quite bizarre.

Try pressing behind the neck, to the top of the ears. OHP to front always felt weird, BTN just feels....right. Seated or standing, doesn’t matter.

Since you *******s are scaring OP I’ll offer a counterpoint to the heart talk. He already does squats and dead’s, both which tax you more than OHP and doesn’t feel this way. It could be a circulation issue when your arms are raised or you suck at breathing correctly.

    Dont do this OP

Squats/deads are still some of the biggest bang for your buck exercises for quads/glutes/hamstrings though

There are way better options for shoulders

Like I can do maybe between 185 to 225 for reps if I'm doing a standing OHP, but I can use 100 to 120 pound dumbbells if I'm doing a seated shoulder press, or even more weight than that on a machine. I'd be hard pressed to find something where I can tax my hamstrings to the same extent as in a deadlift

I think it's partially breathing but some of it may be genetics, like the placement of your arteries/veins. i think the overhead movement probably constricts some some of that stuff contributing to light-headedness srs. could be wrong though because even with dumbbells doing standing OHP I would get a bit of that light-headedness so I know for a fact it isn't my neck but I wouldn't get it sitting down which maybe kinda debunks that. hard to know for sure

I get exactly this sometimes too. Like I'll get a little bit of the light headed sensation during first few reps and during unrack, but the brain fog will fade and I'm able to power through the set, often feeling even a touch stronger than usual.

Push/Pull? I still do tons of normal exercises, it's easier to say what is excluded now: dips (unless it's a dip machine where my arms are at my side or forward, the behind the back dip is what kills ya), OHP, behind-neck pull-downs, instead of straight overhead dumbbell press, i do it at an incline.

Ultimately the PT's and surgeons told me so long as my arm movements are in front of my body and not behind or over my head I am good to go.

    Just do standing dumbbell presses.

Only do dumbbells crew. Shoulders feel way better with no more barbell benching/shoulder pressing.

I never do standing OHP. Don't care what anyone says, it's very low on the list of exercises optimal for shoulder hypertrophy.

And if you're already benching with decent volume it's most likely going to be a disproportionate stress on the anterior delts.

I respect a strong OHP but I agree with the argument that it's not the best choice.

It's this, because I've had the same issue. Before I had access to a rack I used to get the bar into position by doing a power clean. If I kneel down for too long I almost faint after the bar comes up.

I never do standing OHP. Don't care what anyone says, it's very low on the list of exercises optimal for shoulder hypertrophy.
I rarely see big jacked dudes doing heavy standing OHP. It's almost always seated DB press or a machine press

225 OHP for one rep isn't very impressive anyway

wrong. 225 OHP is impressive and 99.9% of the gym can't do it.

unless you are a full on bodybuilder or powerlifter.

its probably equivalent to 3plates+ on the bench. which is also impressive and most of the gym can't do it.

I can bench well over 315 and I doubt I could have ever done a strict OHP 225 standing (I did 185x7 or 8 once, but you get a stretch reflex when doing reps)

I think for me my bench would be around 405 when I can do strict standing OHP 225 for reps, if I ever get there
    Best lifts:
    Bench press: 315x4, 345x1
    Squat: 465x1
    Strict press: 185x8, 195x5, 215x1
Deadlift: 405x13 (conv tap'n'go with straps)

I just saw on youtube this guy is squatting 700lbs, his OHP is 225x5.

    405bench sounds about right.

Seen plenty of 315 benches in the gym, but never seen someone strict press over 185 seated or standing ever. Also love seated OHP.

I tended to always get dizzy during OHP, when I started out. Sometimes I even saw black. I fixed my breathing and didn't have any issues since then.

Id say its pretty impressive if its strict standing brah.

Never see anyone standing OHP (or seated) over 220. I did 220 x 5 strict standing today and that was one of the hardest lifts I've done

I too stopped doing ohp long ago and it sucks cause I was pretty strong at it, for me it was shoulder instability/scapular issues but i've noticed no lack of shoulder development and just increased my medial delt workload which makes the shoulder look more aesthetic anyways

Only a fraud who doesn't actually lift would say 225 strict OHP isn't impressive.

Actual strong lifters like yourself KNOW how challenging it is, and how few can do it.

It's probably not even him in his avi lol

You should probably go to better gyms if 225 OHP 1RM and 315 bench 1RM are impressive to you lol

My best deadlift is 655 and that's not even impressive, dunno why you think I'd fraud

Because how long did it take you to get those numbers? Years of hard work probably right?

Anyone who put in that work isn't gonna discredit themselves and say, "its not impressive" when less than 1% of gym go-ers can do it.
