I think they really struggle to accept that other people think differently than them - there are still people that think Russia is why Trump won in 2016 - they can't accept that that many people willingly voted for him (also why you never hear of how Trump got more votes in 2020) he was probably expecting to be praised for this

Like I said, I think the guy's sense of reality is so warped that he believes Kyle is guilty and everyone sees it that way and that only a small minority of people would think he is innocent, hence "their side of the story"
