Benefits: Preventing illness and reducing transmission, which in turn slows the rate of new genetic variation and lessens that chance that an immune-evading variant arises. Vaccines reduce transmission. Other than the very few exceptions like toxin targeting vaccines and those that create localized responses protecting specific organs, if a vaccine reduces or prevents illness, it is going to reduce transmission. What the science community didn't know was if covid vaccines were going to stop transmission entirely. Lay people starting misconstruing this for "has no effect on transmission." The strong majority of human vaccines are not leaky, but a few are. The best examples of leaky vaccines are in veterinary medicine. It was unknown if vaccinated individuals were still going to transmit to a non-negligible degree or not. Anyone worth a damn understood that someone with an immune response capable of controlling the disease manifestation was also controlling pathogen growth rate and thus curtailing transmission prospects.
