Today, the absolute low season, there are 145 new fires, 4 large uncontained fires, and 6 large contained fires. A random region of the country, the northern Rockies, almost 20,000 acres are burning, and 51,00 acres in the country.

Crew bosses in my company, are earning $50/hr minimum. Some of those guys are Paramedics, work year round, and have tons of certifications, so you don't pull in a small amount of dough. Some of the crew bosses I met, had less than 6 years experience. A small bonus, they get free Arc'tryx gear as well.

I used to work with an old Apache Indian cop. He had been a hotshot prior to getting hired by the PD. He deployed his shelter and was burned over twice while fighting fires in CA.
One of the old attorneys in the office was a smoke jumper prior to going to college and law school. He said all of his deployments were by helicopter and not parachute.
RIP Granite Mountain Hotshots
The Arizona State Forestry Division released 21 videos showing firefighters battling the Yarnell Hill Fire in Arizona on June 30, 2013. The videos, which the state division said it obtained in a Freedom of Information Act request from the US Forest Service, show the firefighters before and after confirming that 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, a wildire crew from the Prescott Fire Department, had been killed.

Fire shelters are no guarantee, and if you deploy one, it's pretty much the end. They only protect against radiate heat- if fire touches it, you're done.
The Yarnell Hill Fire is one of the biggest mysteries in fire history. An extremely experienced crew of hotshots, for reasons unknown, decided to go into the most dangerous area they could have possible gone, and died.
The movie they made about it, although there's a lot of dramatization, is really good. 'Only the Brave' has Josh Brolin a few big names as well.Every Night & every Morn

I have hunted javelina in that area quite a bit and know the terrain well. Like you, I can't figure out how they got cornered like they did.
They had been "in the black" then left for some reason. Perhaps they saw one of the ranches being threatened and tried to get between the ranch and the fire.▪█─────█▪ Equipment Crew #53 ▪█─────█▪
