Anyone have one of these?
My gf was thinking of getting a mazda cx 5. But it's 4 cylinders and the seats are oddly small. They are flying out of the dealership and from what i understand it's impossible to get more than 2k off.
So after the test drive i took her to the nissan dealership where i got my pathfinder.
The murano seems to chit all over the cx 5. More power, more comfortable, more cameras, more safety features. Anyway, i negotiated a 41.8k msrp to 33.5k. The cx 5 is 31.5k. For 2k, or 3k this seems to be an easy decision. Unfortunately the murano doesn't have as good of ratings, so she's not sure...
Wondering if anyone knows anything that would help sway this decision.

My father in law had a 2019 and while it was nice, and he enjoyed it, just wasn't worth all the problems he had with it. The Mazda will probably be headache free, and the resale value for Mazda's is pretty damn good.

I have a 2019 Mazda Cx-5. It is great. Mazda is is tons better than Nissan. Mazda are still made in Japan.
The seat are not small. What kind of people are sitting in it? I had my friends in it and they all said they had enough space. So what if it's 4 cylinders? You save more on gas and it doesn't need more power.

Yeah that's kind of the point. For what she would be paying for the cx 5 she can move up to a higher category of suv.
It wasn't the speed of the 4 cylinder engine that bothered her, it was the engine noise. The murano was definitely faster, but the engine was much quieter too.
I don't think there are deals to be had on the cx 5 even if i check different dealers. 2 other people came in while we were there and everyone was there for a cx 5.I'm just a white guy from the future, I'm completely out of touch

I'm not trying to insult your car.
Can you give reasons why you think Mazda is better than Nissan?
She's 5'6" I'm 6'0". She noticed the seats were small. I was fine, but once she said it and i got in another car she was absolutely right. The seats were small and the lumbar support wasn't great.
Also the display on top of the dashboard instead of being in the dashboard seemed weird but I'm sure you get used to it.I'm just a white guy from the future, I'm completely out of touch

I rented a CX-5 and was quite impressed with it. Impressed enough to look at buying one. The seats weren't terrible, but weren't great, I agree. I thought it drove quite well for an SUV and the adaptive cruise control was an eye opener. I might not buy a vehicle without a good ACC feature. As others have mentioned, maybe look into the Diesel version, but it will be louder. I felt like the version I drove had enough power, even through the mountains, and the MPG was pretty decent.
What's also on my radar are the used Lexus NX 200t/300 and Acura RDX. If you're looking at SUVs at that price point, I would test drive a used RDX A-SPEC and I would more than likely go with that. They're not in the same class at all, but used ones are in/below your price range. I haven't test drove either, but everyone seems to be quite damn happy with the Acura RDX. They have a killer sound system, interior/exterior is beautiful, AWD versions, and it's an Acura which means it'll be extremely reliable. For someone who is pretty conservative with their money the Acura really makes me want to blow some money.

I have a 2017 CX-5 Grand Touring w/preferred package and it's fantastic. The driving experience is excellent, mechanically sound, trouble free, adaptive cruise and heads up display is awesome, 10-speaker Bose sounds incredible. It looks better than the RAV4, CRV, Rogue, etc IMO.
I am averaging 23.1mpg and I wish that were better, thats my only gripe.

No experience with Nissan but I like Mazda. We've had a 3 for the last 6.5 years with no issues. I've ridden in a CX5 and didn't think it was terribly small. Next car will probably be a CX5 and we'll probably own at least one Mazda until they piss us off for whatever reason.

Both my parents bought new nissans and they are about 10 years old now and had nothing but problems. They are built cheap. We had a mazda in the late 90s and that thing lasted for ever and never had issues until they gave it to my brother who never did an oil change or any maintenance. Look up the latest reliability charts/comparisons. Mazda is one of the most reliable and known for having superior handling and transmissions. I had an 03 Lexus made in japan, awesome car but I sold it because] I wanted a small suv and it was nearing its end. Yes you get used to the dash, I like it. If you are using navigation you need it higher to keep your eyes on the road. What I did not like was the climate controls are low but I got used to it. There is now a Carbon edition that has a much larger display and turbo which brings up the horsepower from 187 to 227.
I haven't driven any new nissans, maybe they have improved but my Mazda is very quiet and can easily get up to 90 on the highway and see no need for extra power or turbo.
btw the Murano and Cx 5 are not exactly in the same category. The Murano is a bigger car with bigger engine. What I really wanted was a used Lexus RX 350 but for a used price I got a new Cx 5.Last edited by AlexDeLasFlores; 04-14-2021 at 11:55 AM.

Well this has been helpful.
I got a smoking deal on my pathfinder @23.5k for a new 2020 11k off msrp. I wanted a third row and the ability to pull a boat. So at that price i would have had to pay over 10k more for a different car that would serve my purpose so accepting the lemon risk for ok for me.
But if the murano really has consistent transmission problems it's probably not the right car for her as she has other viable options at that price point. Otherwise it looks like people recommend selling it after 5 years when the drivetrain warranty ends.
I appreciate all the info.I'm just a white guy from the future, I'm completely out of touch

Oh boy, wife and I just picked up a 2017 GT with I believe the pref. package as well. It does have 80k miles on it. Personally I do most of my own maintenance and don't see a ton of flaws with the car so I wasn't too worried. Obv the mileage isn't great since we have AWD too, but its close enough to be competitive.
Have you done any mods at all? Are there any issues I should look out for? Rust?
