all i have is windows defender and i have no issues but i wouldn't mind scanning with a free antivirus to see what it can find.

I don't know what the tech world thinks about it but I still use Malwarebytes as my backup to Windows Defender. Its caught quite a few things for me that slipped through WD.
The free version is all I used for a long time but a couple years back I went with the premium which is like $24/year so I don't even pay attention to the cost.***Mariah Carey is my 10/10 Crew***

All you need is windows defender & malwarebytes for the semi-occasional scan
Most of those programs will run in the background and eat your CPU usage, so be mindful of the settings
The best anti-virus is yourself; stop browsing pr0n srs

Another vote for Malwarebytes.
These days I avoid AVG because they were bought out by Avast, who were caught collecting and selling user data. They've supposedly closed that subsidiary down, but it's hard to regain trust after that kind of breach from a supposed security company.
If you're willing to pay a little, you can get Bitdefender licenses on sale for a good price. They've gotten to the point where it's not only low overhead, but it's completely unobtrusive these days to the point that I never notice it. It was down to either that or Kapersky AV from the research I did, but I went with Bitdefender and haven't had any issues.
I think that I could get Norton for free through Comcast, but forget what the reviews say, they're obnoxious and a hog. And definitely avoid McAfee Antivirus; just take it from the man himself:
As blissful88 said, you are going to be the primary defense, although it is important to have a backup because of how websites and even extensions can be compromised these days.
A good adblocking addon like ublock origin on all of your browsers will certainly help to not only keep you safer, but keep you sane as well.I will stand firm, I refuse to kneel - The fury in me is divine

Just wear two masks and you’ll be good bro
-Some people say good things come to those who wait, truth is, good things come to those who work..... who work later.....who work harder...... who are willing to go further than anyone else to get them. If you're waiting for good things to come to you, you'll be waiting for a pretty long time.
