Opposite of the under appreciated dish is the dish that is over appreciated.
For example, sushi. Some people act like its the greatest thing since sliced bread. Its poverty raw fish and rice. Like if I was stranded on a deserted island and had to eat it fine. And if you give me enough wasabi and soy sauce to dunk it in i’ll eat it. But i would way rather have a nice steak or lobster or double double.
Also, crab legs. I mean they taste ok, but the level of work to get some meat just makes it more frustrating that anything. Its like trying to crack almonds open with a hammer.

Sushi is one of the most refreshing foods I can think of and I enjoy it a lot, but I do agree. At the end of the day, it's not the most satisfying choice and I'd oftentimes rather have something more substantial.
My vote goes to cake. I find that many people tend to go on and on about it but I have never found it that desirable.Bench: 345

IMO sushi deserves the hype (just ate it for supper). It's not my number 1 choice for takeout food (that one goes to indian food) but it's a close second. My only problem with it is that I can never get full from it unless I eat an enormous cheat meal.
I agree with cake, never understood the hype.
But I think my vote goes to donuts. Just a boring dry thing with a hole in it.

I couldn’t afford to get full on sushi, around here even the cheap hole in the wall places are like $12 for 6 little pieces that fill you up as much as a dollar menu item somewhere.
Cake can be pretty bad, especially most birthday cakes or store cakes with that wax and sugar frosting that coats your tongue.2 time survivor of The Great Misc Outages of 2022

While I still like some of these... they’re all over hyped
Avocado toast
French fries (the greasy, traditional kind)
Bacon (yeah I said it!)
Bubble tea
Lobster
Honeydew
Plain ChocolateLast edited by AdamWW; 04-13-2021 at 12:01 PM.

I like sushi but its not something I want to eat every week and most the places around here that have it have other things I like way more. Cake is also a pass unless its cheesecake then I'm going to town. I don't know that I think any food is overappreciated. I'm gonna go with salads I don't like dressing so much and it just feels like I'm eating leaves, put enough cheese fruit nuts meat in it and a dressing that is light like a fruity vinaigrette and Ill eat it but I just think the core components taste terrible.

It's hard even putting certain things in my list because I still LIKE some of them, I just think people talk them up too much.
I love pancakes tho...
I would actually add Steak to mine too...
I know so many people like to just eat plain steak but I never got it at all... it's just a slab of tissue...."When I die, I hope it's early in the morning so I don't have to go to work that day for no reason"

Agreed, that was the point of the thread, I like most things on occasion, and I’ll pretty much eat whatever. But the fact that some people seem to make a big deal out of some new or “edgy” food, then the mob mentality takes over and becomes this big wave of hype. Like food trucks, wow, lets charge double for a mediocre sandwich that you normally wouldn’t order, but its from a truck with questionable cleanliness so all of a sudden its a trend.

100% agreed. Cake's overhyped af. I mean cake can be amazing at times if it's a really well-made, but it needs to be...really well-made. Your run-of-the-mill supermarket sheet-cake or dessert cake at a restaurant is no good to me.
I used to love donuts as a kid, but I completely agree. They're almost all sugar with very little in the way of interesting texture or flavor complexity. Cookies absolutely mog donuts any day of the week.
In to say all of these. Srs. I'd also add hot dogs & bratwursts to the list. 90% of hot dogs were fuking trash to me before I even stopped eating meat (& 100% of bratwursts). Oh, & BBQ ribs. My first few bites of a rack of ribs tended to be good if they were really well-made authentic Southern or KC BBQ, but by the end of a half rack I was usually about ready to roll of a bridge from the stomach bloat and palette fatigue from the fatty, greasy mess.
Agreed & agreed. Chicken was just a vehicle for sauces for me back when I ate it, & as far as sauce vehicles go, tofu>>>>chicken. Yea, I said it. Team Soyboy
I agree with all of these except acai. I get acai a lot, & every time people scoff at me and ask why I eat that. I live in LA no less. Acai bowls are 0% hyped these days. They haven't been a trend for at least 5 years. It also pains me to say pancakes are overrated cuz I love them, but you're right.
So much fuking this! Steak's probably tied with bacon & avocado toast in my mind as the most overrated food on the planet.
This country has the weirdest obsession with food trucks. I've lived on both coasts for years of my life & I'll tell ya, that chit gets old fast. I think it's mostly a tourist or novelty thing. By my second or third return to the same food truck, my stomach's fully ready to return my food for me. I don't know any other locals who rely on that chit food other than tradesmen bruhs who do it out of convenience.
100% FUK ALL THOSE RESTAURANTS! I wish those places would fuking disappear. People these days have gotten quantity confused with quality. That being said, I do enjoy Cheesecake Factory every couple months or so. I usually have some of that God-tier brown bread & just get a steamed salmon with vegetables and (typically split) one of their completely not-overrated cheesecake slices for dessert though. I don't really ever go there and gorge.
Sushi, on the other hand, I can & do eat a ton of. I've actually literally said on multiple occasions that sushi is one of the few foods on Earth that's completely not overrated. Have you bros ever tried nobu? It's edible art in the truest sense. I'm honestly shocked yall think that chit's overrated. I suppose it's overpriced if you don't love sushi, but I legitimately fuking love it on an absolutely primal level. I also disagree that salad is in anyway overrated. Some of my best meals ever have been salads, and I know of nobody else on Earth who raves about salads.

I've only eaten there a handful of times, but CF portions are within reason and not bad for a chain if you ask for 1/2 the salt. And yeah, that bread is pretty good.
Only once years ago when I expensed it - very good but should be tbh... I prefer good sushi in lesser known hole-in-the-walls. Think for appetizers I had some literally live octopus or clam that was moving, and beef that was like $25 or something for each bitesize piece.

I get that people have different tastes and some people truly do love sushi. But I think sushi is one of those “cult” followings where there are PLENTY of people who don’t actually like it who say they do to “fit in” or exaggerate how much they actually like it. Kind of like those people in high school who claimed to surf when they had never even been in the water.
