Im Dr Glass: Instant Injury no matter what i do, going on 2.5 years - devastaing me.

Not looking for sympathy we all value hard work and time devoted to our bodies. I used to stomp around in here so long ago, i dont even remember my old username.

But I am looking for support and advice.

Background is I'm 49 years old incredibly fit for my age at least in terms of cardio and body fat which is around 18.2% (178 pounds now). BUt the degradation of my body is devastating me both mentally and physically. Started about two and a half years ago I got plantar fascia from running which immediately stopped that activity, and only healed due to covid and not walking to work. Also within that time I got a shoulder injury which required surgery. Over this time I've since lost 15 lb of lean muscle mass that took me years to obtain.

The issue I have is no matter what I seem do do, or how light i go, i seem to be injured 100% of the time now. This is not an exaggeration. Its always something - my elbow, shoulder, knee, neck, lower back, wrist, basically every joint i have, just not all at once. So it's one thing to just say like my dick doctor did on Monday "I'm older and can't expect to be in fit as I used to be", but Ive worked out since i was 15. I know the drill.......but even when trying to not deliberately overdo it I can't NOT get injured even when I AM LITERALLY TRYING not to get injured. This back injury and latest torn meniscus is my breaking point. ANd now my back is hurting when i wake up (this just started last week) so at my wits end.

MAIN CONCERN: This is more than old guy stuff I believe. HAS to be. It's like I am that Dr Glass character - I am truly beginning to believe I have a disease that is affecting my joints and ligaments, and muscles as silly as this sounds, - but more so than the average man my age. My connective tissue in general seems to be HYPER senstive which is causing me to get injured with the slightest movements. A frigging set of careful burpees caused the bottom of my foot to hurt. WTF.

I am open to stories, possible causes, potential science based supplements, and would pay a small fortune to reverse the clock back 5 years. HELP!!!

There are so many possibilities, it's impossible for anyone to know over a forum. But it might (or might not...) be a medical issue like a form of arthritis (lots of different types) connective tissue disorder some kind of systemic inflammation

Speak to your doc about this, if it is something like a condition I semi randomly listed above, then these can be treated to keep under control, but nothing can be treated until a doc diagnoses it.

Meanwhile try going to an easier yoga class in addition (not replacement) to your current exercise. Definitely speak to doc.

    Get well soon.

This is the internet and we cannot see what your workout is like. One person's easy workout may be another's hard workout.

You SAY you are taking it easy, but, sorry, if you are doing burpees, you are not taking it easy. Burpees are a very dynamic exercise that stresses the body. Considering that you are recovering from a foot injury from running, burpees seem like a poor choice for an exercise if the goal is to avoid injury.

Are you doing Crossfit-type exercises or workouts? How about giving us a breakdown of a typical workout, including weights, sets, reps, and resting time. How much recuperation time are you allowing between workouts? How about deloads?

I took up powerlifting in my late 50s. I am in my mid-60s now and still lifting. I don't remember the last injury I suffered (and not because my memory is shot).

My personal take on training as you age is this:

resistance training is ideal because it prevents age related muscle loss and it CAN be used to improve the condition of vulnerable muscles to prevent posture deterioration and joint pain in many cases.

Poor muscle condition is caused by repetitive activities (or inactivity) so some kinds of training can cause joint issues - not necessarily high impact but when you use a muscle through a limited range of motion.

The ideal training to counteract this is basic bodybuilder training BUT you must have a balance of exercises to train each muscle on all sides of a joint proportionately.
Always favour smooth tempo, moderate resistance (you start to feel a burn after 10-15 reps) movements which use the fullest possible ROM. Never fast jerky stuff.

Stretching I've found doesn't help by itself but can be used in conjunction with resistance training in particular cases- such as if you have trouble getting into the correct ROM for an exercise to begin with.

I use cross symmetry straps for my shoulders (previous surgery). I do sit ups and i do push ups. That is all.
I cant jump as learned that hurts my foot. I cant do squats as that hurts my knees. Def no deadlifts anymore! I am sort of stopped almost everything until i figure this out.

OK, but when you did workout, as Restoring Tally asks, what kind of thing we're you doing for a workout. Please don't just list a couple of body part, let us know what kind of style, intensity, volume you were doing and how you tried to balance exercise and rest

I feel the same way sometimes. Here's a couple things that I've changed and that have been suggested to me:

Diet: My philosophy on eating has always been to eat healthy foods and eat lots of protein. If I wanted to gain weight, I just ate a ton. If I wanted to lose weight, I drastically cut calories. Recently, I switched to an approach where I'm carefully counting my macros and if I try to gain or lose weight, I do it very carefully. I bought an app to help me with this that I love.

Weight lifting: I've always done about 4 exercises per muscle, around 4 sets per exercise, and I'd go to failure. I'd usually pick a weight that would give me around 8 to 12 reps. I recently switched to hypertrophy training. I'm following a template that I bought which usually has me doing fewer sets, fewer exercises per muscle, higher reps, and never going to failure. Most of the time, I'm doing three reps less than failure. This has made an enormous difference for me with joint pain. My lifts are going up dramatically b/c things don't hurt when I'm lifting.
TRT: I haven't made this leap yet and probably never will, but it's one that gets suggested a lot.

    First: See your doctor.

Second, I am going to assume that if you've worked out that long you are not missing anything essential in your diet. However...this is abit of a ticklish subject, but I am only a few years older than you, and I've known two people in my extended circle who have had issues similar to yours. Both started lifting at a young age, and both used steroids/hormones 30+ years ago when less was known about side effects and long term issues. Don't take it the wrong way, its just something that occurred to me.

OP here: Getting my blood drawn today to check for inflammation markers as suggested. I will report back!

To your second point this is very interesting!! I did once use a prohormone called "1-AD" of Patrick Arnold fame when i was in my early 30s i think. (2001-2002) Remember that? I assume some of you "old dudes" remember!! All i know is it ended in a slew of controversy, but was working on my career and was unable to follow all of that on the BB forums to pay attention.

Granted I only did that for a short time as it was so expensive and other than that, I never used anything else....but that stuff definitely worked and had impact. Knowing what we know now, I could see that having potential long term impacts so I think your thoughts might have validity/merit here. In hindsight, i am glad i never had the money to really take more of that.

Ill report back on my blood results. Thanks all. BTW, why do the forums add yars to peoples age....at least my own. I am 49 and have the correct birthday on my profile but my profile box to the left says I am 51. Odd.

You shouldn’t have these issues at that age imo ,so I think your right , you’ve got some undiagnosed medical issue from the sounds of it .
In your scenario, all I can see helping is lots of warming up before you proceed . It seems the older I get the more I have to warm up .
I have injuries from dirt biking which prohibits me from doing heavy squats or deadlifts .
135 pounds is the only thing I can do on those exercises, so I do a lot of sets .
It’s pretty embarrassing , but better than nothing, and I can’t stand only doing upper body all the time .
I’d like to know what your opinion of light weight is

I am now relegated to body weight and bands. The back injury that prompted this post and was my wit's end turned out to be a herniated disk to add to my misery. Hurt more than Plantar facisia which is saying something. So now I am beginning Physical therapy for both my knees and to strengthen my back. I have 16 pound kettleball but now do not even use that. At least until i feel strong again. I 100% agree we must move it or loose it, but I seem to be "loosing it" faster than i can "use it"! I am looking forward to getting my blood results and PT to really learn the issue here.

As far as i am concerned I am now in a new reality now and my journey is only now just beginning. I hope to be in here more to learn from you all while I begin this chapter. SLow and steady wins the race.

Herniated disk , man sorry to hear that . My friend has 3 herniated discs from an accident at the mine.
I don’t know if you’ve heard about this, but they now put you in a computer controlled contraption that pulls you apart , like they did in the old days to torture you .
My friend went downhill dramatically when he was forced to go to physio, but this new machine they have in Calgary fixed 95% of his pain the first session .
If you want a link I’ll get him to send me one .Maybe it will help you
