I stocked a pond with catfish, but there was a snapping turtle in there. I caught the turtle yesterday and it's in the bottom half of a 55 gallon drum by my garage. It probably weighs 20 lbs. Am I a redneck?

I got catfished by a snapping turtle once.

For those of you who might wonder what snapping turtle meat looks like, it goes from deep red to white with everything in between. It's tough as leather, but I would eat it again. Taste is somewhere between beef, chicken and fish.

Some tenants of mine from Louisiana showed me how to clean it (they cleaned it). They said snapping turtle meat sells for $60-$70 a pound back where they are from. This turtle yielded about 5 pounds of meat. But they are Cajun or Coonass people. Things are a bit different in Louisiana.

I'm guessing he cooked it. Think I had some famous turtle soup in NOLA decades ago. Tasted like meat of some sort if I recall.

That's raw meat in the pic. The red meat came from the leg quarters, slow twitch muscles. The white meat came from the neck, fast twitch muscles. When that turtle strikes, its head moves so fast you don't see it move. You just see it from the retracted position and then it's in the extended position grabbing something with it's beak. Sort of like a rattlesnake or cobra strike.

Snapping turtles eat catfish. Eat a turtle and you're eating catfish.

I'm changing my vote in this poll from turtle to catfish. Tonight I'll give the rest of the turtle meat to 4 Mexican refinery contractors renting a place from me. They live 50 feet away from the Louisiana people.
