Yeah, been there. Took karate for many years and Taekwondo for several. I had been away from it for a few years and when the opportunity came up for some hand to hand combat training I jumped at it. I knew little about holds or chokes. This little fuker got his hands on me and out I went for the first time, I had no idea what had happened.

What do you think? Any thoughts?
I agree with what everyone in this thread has said. At minimum gross criminal negligence and at most murder 2 if it could be proven Chauvin disliked Floyd because of their brief stint working together.

I can’t really grasp my head around a cop refusing to remove his knee from a motionless person for so long after being pleaded to by bystanders and EMS.

What blows my mind is that I have no doubt he 100% believed he would get away with it.

So state coroner says the knee played no part in Floyd’s death.

    He should walk.

    Prepare for riots

Gotcha! So besides boarding up windows and filling every last gun you got with ammo, what else does one do to prepare for riots???

According to prosecutors these opinions are going to be endorsed by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner as well.
Pretty good article. It seems like from that it would be difficult to argue against autopsy findings without something pretty solid to use as a defense. I think the previous relationship could be the biggest factor to a jury. That could have a pretty big effect. If it’s known there were previous animosity he’ll likely get the highest charge.

Chauvins a dirt bag no doubt but so was Floyd, I have read the actual coroners report and he was pretty much a dead man walking and while the cop may have hastened his death I don't think by the point they were at there was any saving the guy. I think the cop either walks or gets a slap on the wrist & we watch Minneapolis descend into chaos again.

but given a long enough timeline, we're all dead men walking.

Based on your interpretation of the evidence so far, what do you think should happen to Chauvins?

Chauvin's guilty of killing Floyd if his conduct and the drugs both caused Floyd to die. That's the problem for the defense.

Not sure what the various sentences can be? Is there being an accomplice to a death which is basically doing nothing to help and possibly to hasten the guys demise?

When and where does the fault come down on the person who ingested the drugs of their own free will?

If they're allowing witness opinions and super inflammatory testimony like they are, there's no semblance of a fair trial going on.

The causation question for the jury was very clear in the jury instructions. You take your victim as you found him.

"To cause means to be a substantial causal factor in causing the death. … The fact that other causes contribute to the death does not relieve the defendant of criminal liability"

I live just south of Mpls/St. Paul and that is going to happen either way, brah. Since he won't get life in prison even if he is convicted--that will be enough for people to burn everything down again. Only question is whether or not the MN Governor will decide to go into hiding for 3 days again during it like the first time......

It is basically the difference between murder and manslaughter though. A second degree manslaughter conviction will be viewed as a "slap on the wrist" by the mob......

It is basically the difference between murder and manslaughter though. A second degree manslaughter conviction will be viewed as a "slap on the wrist" by the mob......

Not really, he can still be convicted of either 2nd or 3rd degree murder. The murder 2 is murder by means of a violent felony -- and in Minnesota violent felonies that give rise to murder charges include assault.

The underlying felony is labeled in the complaint: Assault 3rd degree. This means the State must prove that Chauvin intentionally used force against Floyd in a manner that was not needed to act in his lawful capacity as a police officer, and that this force caused Floyd’s death. They do not need to prove Chauvin intended to render Floyd unconscious or kill Floyd.

The other murder charge is 3rd degree murder which in Minnesota is an unintentional killing done with by some act inherently dangerous to others AND evincing a depraved mind. The choke hold is inherently dangerous to others, that part is easy. But the depraved mind part is harder to sell in the situation. Although literally every witness on the scene except for his codefendants thought he was going way too far, even Chauvin's sergeant, who arrived and quickly determined that Chauvin needed to be immediately investigated for unauthorized use of force.

In the end it comes down what the jury thinks and I imagine the medical examiner and a few other witnesses will make or break this case -- assuming the jury is able to follow all of it and they don't just tune out to the ocean of evidence before them.

I guarantee whatever he gets convicted of--won't be enough to satisfy the mob though (since it isn't gonna be life or the death penalty). Gonna be lots of burning, rioting, looting, etc. again.......

Absolutely. I could have posted this in the crazy but true stories from our school days, but as kids (12-14 or so) we went through a phase of voluntarily being knocked out. All it required was for someone to bear hug you while you held your breath and strained. You'd go out in ~10 seconds or so IIRC and would wake up with a wicked headache. We did it in class once in the 8th grade when the teacher stepped out for a prolonged period of time

Agreed. Short of gallows being available either in or immediately outside the courthouse for a hanging or beheading, the mob won't be satisfied

The last time this happened--our governor went MIA for 3 days instead of calling the National Guard. It cost hundreds of people their businesses, most of which were actually owned by African-American people btw........
