It's not that unlikely that he did improve in those 10 years though. I agree with you he's not some kind of god driver but he's definitely very talented. The cars Schumacher drove were mediocre at best, since Mercedes only started pumping serious money into the F1 project for the 2014 new regulations. Which is exactly the year they started dominating (not 2013 when Hamilton joined).
Mercedes could have put just about any proven F1 driver in that car and he'd be a record world champion now. Especially paired with a bum like Bottas.
