$27 million settlement to the family of George Floyd

The Minneapolis City Council unanimously approved a $27 million settlement Friday in the civil lawsuit brought by the family of George Floyd. The vote was 13-0. The settlement includes $500,000 to be spent on community efforts near the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue, which has become known as George Floyd Square.

it's gonna be hard to get 12 jurors to believe there was any intent to kill on Chauvins part.

I think it will depend on what sort of training they can show Chauvin had been given. If the training includes instruction that a knee to the back of the neck can cause death by asphyxiation, combined with the victim crying out that he could not breath, then there is a very strong argument that after a certain point Chauvin fully knew that he was killing the victim and chose to continue his actions.

Just because some forms of neck restraint are sometimes allowed in their manual doesn't give carte blanche to do it in any and every case for unlimited amounts of time and regardless of how it's visibly affecting the restrained person.


If that is the case Chauvin is also going to have to take the stand, and he's going to have to answer for the notion that he had no earthly idea he was exacerbating Floyd's medical problems with his knee restraint when people were screaming with him to stop and a fellow officer was asking him if he should consider stopping. Good luck with that...

I remember seeing a vid about 8 months ago where Floyd was complaining about "not being able to breathe" while they were trying to wrestling him into the car initially.....

This was before he hit the ground with Chauvin on his back...

The trial should be interesting...

Minnesota uses a "substantial contribution" test for cause of death. Even if Floyd was already going to die from a a ******** overdose, if the neck restraint assisted in his death, the officer's criminally liable. The Medical Examiner ruled it was a homicide -- i.e., human-caused death -- after consideration of the tox results. I think the medical experts are going to be a lot less kind to the ******** defense than people assume.

I watched those vids a while ago, so refresh my memory on the sequence of events.

It doesn’t really matter if the cops were out to get him or not, the officer can still be liable for Floyd’s death. In MN it's enough to prove causation if the defendant's actions substantially contribute to the death. Both medical experts that have done autopsies have concluded with medical certainty that the officers' body weight and pressure to Floyd's neck was a substantial contributing factor to his death.
