likely incentives. one could argue they need him more this year than they did last year. obviously Jarrett Stidham isn't going to be a thing for them. knows the offense, bill likes him, etc
even if he makes the full 14, compared to the market for the position that isn't expensive. marcus mariota is making comparable money as a backup.

To be fair 14m isn’t alot for a starting qb. Last yr the Pats had a ton of guys sit out for covid, Cam had covid and suffered after he recovered from it, Brady left bc team was trash - Cam comes and team is trash which somehow = Cam is trash?, Cam didn’t play well but Pats did decent considering everything. I’d rather have Cam at 14m vs Watt at 12m next season.

What other options do they have? I just read that they were calling about Garoppolo but the niners weren't interested in trading him. Watson and Wilson probably aren't going anywhere and Newton is better than the other available qbs (Bridgewater, Darnold, Trubisky). They also won't be able to get any of the top qbs in the draft (maybe Jones but not sure if Belichek thinks he's worth their 1st round pick)

I know his name keeps coming up but I don't see the Jets trading Darnold. Jacksonville is obviously going to take Lawrence off the board and besides him I don't see another QB in the class that's a sure fire NFL starter. I'd just stick with what I have, trade the #2 for a haul, and use it to boost the team in other areas.

They probably think Cam now has a better understanding of the offensive system. It's documented that Cam has had to have the offense dumbed down for him because he can't understand it and, IIRC, the Pats' offensive system is complicated.
