Messed up my middle knuckle punching the heavy bag and a month later it's still swollen and sore. Much better than it was, but still f*cked up. And I don't see myself hitting the bag hard again for at least another couple months at this rate.
Also, if you rupture or fully tear something called your sagittal band you need surgery to fix it.

I went bowling on New Years Eve a couple years ago and hurt my middle finger. Thought I strained or something. Thing wasn't right for that ENTIRE NEXT YEAR. I even had to use a strap on just that one hand when lifting cuz my grip strength was so bad/painful. Never went in and had it looked at, but it did eventually go away after a LONG time. I thought for sure I tore ligaments or something.
