I think wrestling + boxing is a godly combo, we haven't even seen someone that's an expert in both yet. Khabib has great wrestling but only decent striking
Against wrestlers your hesitant to throw kicks which means if you're also good at boxing you can **** your opponent up by closing the distance

Best combination for MMA would be to know all 4 things as best as you can: punch/elbow, kick/knee, subs, wrestle. For self defense you would add a 5th: headbutts. Then self defense wise there are weapons etc.
As far as priorities go, modern approach seems to suggest that western boxing is paramount, but of course assuming you are aware of kicks and takedowns as well as submissions, knees and elbows, and can at least defend yourself from those.

That just happens to be because modern MMA is a young sport so people transitioned to it rather than start at it. People would go into MMA from college wrestling or if their boxing or kickboxing career was not bringing in the money they hoped for and so on. Pro wrestlers got into MMA as well. But now you have more and more people who start at MMA.
TLDR
- MMA fighters specializing in one Martial Art is a consequence of them switching from another sport into MMA, not because they intended to specialize in one aspect of MMA. That would NOT be smart.

No-gi BJJ and Muay Thai. The days of simply wrestling and boxing are over. The game has evolved.
No-gi / submission grappling will teach control, transitions, and escapes while grounded. Along with actually giving you tools to end the fight from either top or bottom position. Also teaches how to minimize damage while flat on your back. While not emphasizing takedowns as much as traditional wrestling, any good BJJ school will still put a lot of takedown / defense work in.
Muay Thai is the most comprehensive striking system. Simply have to know how to check / defend calf and leg kicks now, as well as deliver and answer with your own. Knees and elbows against the cage / in the clinch are also super important. Boxing does indeed have superior head movement / footwork, but Muay Thai still does a great job of incorporating it.

Why is boxing better for street fights defence than kick boxing/ Muay Thai considering you can stay more out of range?
Both have the same base. The reason Islam went for the nut shot was his sambo base. Idc what Khabib or dc say the guy is not on khabibs level based on that Dober fight. He’s good enough to be a top 5 contender/champion even but nothing about him screams phenom like Khabib. Khabibs mental game was on point

not talking about the street
Because the threat of a takedown is way more imminent when boxing compared to kickboxing, OFC you need to know how to get in range vs kickboxers and check kicks not just sayin it from a pure perspective
Imagine if Mike Tyson had beast wrestling skills and also learned how to check kicks... He'd be a freak in mma

both are great for street defense but I will lean more towards boxing especially against a non trained person who is likely going to come out the gate throwing haymakers
no sport teaches you footwork, head movement, and proper punching than Boxing does. Boxing gets so much hate from people because it’s a “limited art”. who cares? I rather be a master at how to punch then jack of all trades between kicking, punching, elbows, knees.
