I think Russel Crowe killed that role.
You have to realize that character was about a mid 30s guy who was wealthy. A commander/leader. Etc. He was just skilled/intelligent not a brutally strong/fast/jacked guy.

Dougray Scott was originally cast as Wolverine in X Men. But shooting ran long on Mission Impossible 2, so he couldn't make it to the start of X Men and needed to be replaced. Joaquin Phoenix decided his character should put on weight when he became emperor, so Phoenix started to deliberately overeat. Without telling anyone. It took a while but eventually Ridley Scott told him he was getting fat and shouldn't do that, so Phoenix got mad and stopped eating.
