Pence was asked to follow a constitutional method to address the significant concerns over the way the election was run in a few states, which would allow the legislatures of those states a little more time to be certain their certifications were legitimate. He responded by releasing a letter at the last minute stating he refused to violate the constitution by overturning the results, which is not what anyone asked him to do.
