You have to wonder how much happier humans were as hunter gatherers.

Hunter gathering is a very tough lifestyle. I actually was raised in a hunter gatherer culture. It's no picnic with hard work, typically early deaths/disease/war/hunger, very little leisure time, and less access to all sorts of mood enhancing opportunities.

Data suggests a generally strong correlation with SES (as socioeconomic status increases, overall satisfaction/happiness scores increase).
The fallacy of the happy native persists but holds very little water.

THAT SAID, life is and always has been what we make of it.
AND another blip here is that there is good data to suggest depression has steeply increased in countries as the availability of the portable smart device has increased.

The point of the meme is that dogs live in the moment whereas most people don't. Most of us are always on our phones, taking photos of the experience rather being present in the moment, thinking about something other than what we're doing at that moment, etc. Even when you're aware of it, it's a very hard habit to break.

One CAN be happy in any situation, and mindfulness is a great skill to help achieve it.

Correlation is there because wealth/status (SES) is it makes life easier and therefore happier. Being relative in terms of lifestyle, I wonder if it would matter having more money in our current times versus better gear (bows, arrows, knives, baskets) in more ancient times. Either way, life is going to be easier compared to others, which likely drives some level of happiness or satisfaction. Seems to be a human trait / drive (at least for some) to pursue “success” throughout history.

Believe it or not, this is actually true. A researcher by the name of Sepulski studies stress responses and concludes a major downside to intelligence is stress. Animals, particularly prey species, have to deal with some pretty serious stressors, but their stress is very temporary. A lion jumps out of the bushes and chases a gazelle, the gazelle experiences a great deal of stress. However, a few minutes after the chase is done, the gazelle experiences no stress.

That same experience affects humans and other primates (including monkeys) much differently. The reason is that we can formulate mental models and ruminate on them. That is, we mentally recreate the stressor long after the actual stressor has disappeared. A gazelle (or a dog) can't do that. It is literally out of sight out of mind. Once the stressor is gone, they no longer think about it.

I...umm...you know there's a theory that some humans can sometimes be reincarnated solely as canines. Freaky stuff...

If nonhuman animals did talk (can't confirm given insufficient empirical evidence barring the odd parrot and nonhuman primate), we'd have a helluva lot more problems, especially with rights groups and legislators...


(That being said, 2020 has shown that even the most self-proclaimed exemplary countries i.e. The Western World can't even respect or protecr human rights let alone non-human animals trololololololololol)
