It's a security blanket for the mentally weak and ignorant. Remember they said you're wearing a mask to protect others not the other way around.
Masks are good for sneezing, coughing, and talking. They do little else, since vast majority of masks can't filter out viral particles; it's like using a chain-link fence to stop a mosquito. Not to mention majority of studies use KN95 masks, assume perfect fitment, doesn't take into consideration the increase in touching one's face/nose due to frequent adjustments, fogging eyeglass wearers, increase likelihood of bacterial pneumonia, reusing contamination, etc.
I haven't worn a mask outside and have only been confronted once(in a state park on a trail miles from the trailhead in the middle of the forest).
