Want to trade Tacoma for F-150, a good decision?

I have a 2006 Tacoma double cab 4x4 TRD Off Road. It was in the body shop for repairs after an accident. I was given a 2020 F-150 supercrew XLT with the 5.0L V8 for a week. I loved everything about it like the room, ride, power, and sound of the V8. It even got the same gas mileage as my Tacoma.

After getting my Tacoma back and returning the F-150 rental, I kind of miss it. I'm considering getting a 2021 supercrew lariat fx4 with the 3.5L Ecoboost.

I'd maybe look into a Tundra instead, but for american an F150 wouldn't be a bad idea. As stated in the long run a Tundra should be more reliable. However I think 2022 models are revamped and V6 only, maybe score a deal on a 2021 Tundra with a V8.

Tacomas are really good trucks but they don't do anything better than an F150. The F150s of the past 10 years have been very reliable. My best friend is a service writer at the largest Ford dealership in my state and he says all of the problems they get out of F150s are from the fancy gadgets like the seat vibrators and stuff like that so you may want to take that into consideration.

Would make the switch and not even think twice.

I have had two Tacomas prior. Modern full size trucks do EVERYTHING better besides fit in small spaces.

If you liked the power of the 5.0, you will LOVE the power of the ecoboost 3.5L.

Get a 21" F150. I test drove both a 20' and the new 21'. Massive difference, the 21' totally chits on the 20'.

Honestly poor advice. The F-150 is more capable, just as reliable, has roughly the same depreciation, and is really just all around a better truck. Both the Tundra and the 5.0 F-150 will go 300k miles maintained easy. The 3.5 Ecoboost can probably make it there too but I'm 100% as certain with that engine but it will blow the doors off just about any other truck that isn't a Raptor

I'm faithful to toyotas. Always been good to me. But the tacoma is a truck for hippies who go camping once a year.

The 2021 f150s are dope. By the time I save up for a new truck though the new f150s will be 100k.

Agreed on the capability, and that the ecoboost motors FLY. I have a 2019 F150 as my work truck, and a 2018 Tundra as my personal truck.

Do disagree on depreciation and reliability. Tundra depreciation is about 10% higher than F150 after 5 years, and only gets higher as the years / mileage higher. This is directly related to their much higher reliability.

If the OP wants a V8 truck that he will be keeping for a very long time (as him driving a 2006 hints to), the Tundra is the right choice as it is reliable as an anvil since it hasnt changed since 2007. Also, with the 2020 improvements (CarPlay, push button start, proximty entry, etc) it makes them somewhat more passable from a tech future proofing standpoint.

The Tundra has its strengths / weaknesses, but if I was going to buy a new truck today it would definitely be a new F150. If I had a year to decide, I would wait for the redesigned Tundra.

The power and even more power from computer tuning.

Also the 2021 5.0L V8 has cylinder deactivation so that worries me because GM and Rams with cylinder deactivation seem problematic. It also changed to a belt driven oil pump which seems like a bad idea.

The current Tundra is really old and Toyota kept it pretty much the same it first came out in 2007. The F150 has been through 4 generations since 2007.

I have no idea what to expect for 2022. When Toyota changed the engine on the new Tacoma to 3.5L, it was complete garbage.

For me it was max torque at 2500rpm versus 4700rpm in the V8. this also means no downshifting with cruise control on. The turbo just spools up and takes care of it. My V8 would downshift all over the place on road trips and when towing.

Honestly most of the people I know who've had both say the mpg in the eco is worse than the V8 if you have a heavy foot. The eco benefits are that the torque comes in a much, much lower RPM and if you get a tune they will blow the V8 out of the water power wise

Also the 2021 5.0L V8 has cylinder deactivation so that worries me because GM and Rams with cylinder deactivation seem problematic. It also changed to a belt driven oil pump which seems like a bad idea.
Yeah, I've heard a lot of bad things about cylinder deactivation in every application its been used. That's a shame, maybe the ecoboost is impressive, but I sort of subscribe to the old adage of "there's no replacement for displacement", at least not for the sound and feeling.

That’s plain silly. Modern small turbo engines outperform v8’s in every aspect. **** my evo from rolls would wreck a bolt on mustang gt. More air and more fuel
Is power, displacement is important for diesels but gas powered engines turbos will pull on every time.

I would much rather own the V8, NA engines are better in my experience.

True. I had around 500whp stock block and no issues. Was it gonna hold that for 100,000 miles? Probably not. There’s a tradeoff but outright performance I’ll take the smaller forced induction over displacement.8 also appreciate a big lope v8!for the streets but when I wanna go fast a big turbo 4 cylinder will be hard to beat

The Ford mechs are consistently saying that the V8 has been in the shop more than the ecoboost engines, and the turbos are holding up just as long.

It was the valves which have been since replaced for the most part. I have a 5.0 in my shop now for the same problem.

Have a 17’ 3.5 ecoboost, went with ecoboost cause it’s tried and true with massive torque downlow where it matters in day to day driving and towing. These trucks can do 450’ish rwhp before things will start to go wrong from reading but the coyote motor can handle whipple s/c’s. 600rwhp+ on stock long blocks easy. So if you want all out hp go with the v8 but unless you add a whipple, the ecoboost has a much better powerband with street driving.
