She places zero responsibility on herself or her kid.

Everything was "I can't believe the school did this to him."

That mentality right there is why she is a failure, and why he will be a failure. Mentality is more important than grades, and neither of these two have a winning one.

    Brah its Baltimore city schools.

    2019-20 Student demographics. 76.6% African American 13.5% Hispanic/Latino 7.6% White 1% Asian 0.2% ... Baltimore City Public Schools 200 E. North Avenue Baltimore, MD 21202 443-984-2000 . Facebook for Baltimore City Public Schools;
I'd be willing to bet a testicle that the minority demographics, in the case of the school district, are heavily clustered into one or two schools

You could give every school there a trillion dollars and it wouldn't make a difference. Kids that aren't at school that don't have parents invested in their education will fail regardless of how many new Imacs the school has.

I saw a story of a philanthropist that spent his money on inner city kids all through HS. It didn't work, most failed. He had to start from Kindergarten, and a lot of them still failed, but he was more successful. Even playing the father figure role didn't work since all the other kids in the culture are negatively influencing the kids he's trying to get through school successfully.

Because of Covid, schools spent money getting every kid a lap top. One of my friends teaches at a poor public school, and he said 50% of the lap tops ended up at a pawn shop. So already half his class can't actually participate in the class. The other half barely pays attention and turns no work in. Administration wants him to improve the passing rate of students, guidance/graduation councilors tear out and have them do 2 short pages of work from a 6th grade workbook to turn in and ask if that is enough to pass the student. (these are seniors in high school by the way)

Some of these public schools are just an absolute waste of money.

Imagine having such poor parenting skills that you don't know your kid has a 0.13 GPA. Then imagine having the balls to blame teachers.

It's truly a wonder how these areas end up so uneducated.

Well what are they supposed to do if the parents don't parent, and likely don't pay property taxes to fund the school? These people create their own problems, and then instead of working to fix them just go blame others. Such is life for people who don't try to better their circumstances, it is unfortunate for the kids but that is another thing these parents should have thought of. Literally the most selfish group out there, taking no responsibility for their lives, bringing new lives they don't care about into the world, then assuming other people are supposed to help.

School systems, just like local government, are a reflection of the community. You get what you build, in this case the community built ****, so that's what they get. I hope they enjoy it or fix it, not our problem. You ever notice that schools in areas where people don't bother to maintain their lawns and leave trash all over the place are bad? It's because the residents don't care.

Here's a question for you. Why fund school through property taxes? Seems incredibly regressive to me. That just seems to punish the poor.

Why not fund through property taxes? Here's a question for you, what is preventing parents from taking an interest in the education of their children? Baltimore gets $15,168 per student in funding, that's very high

At $15,168 per student, it showed Baltimore in fifth place among the 100 largest school systems — behind New York, Boston and both Howard and Montgomery counties — two wealthier Maryland suburbs.

Unlike those two Maryland districts, Baltimore serves a student population that’s majority African-American and from low-income families.
Here's another question for you, what is different about low-income AA households that means they, for some reason, need higher per student funding than others? Is it perhaps that the parent (rarely 2 are around) simply do not give a single **** about education? I'd bet my life savings on that. If there's some other reason you think AA students can't keep up with others please post it, because I can't think of any other reason.

The reason I think funding via property taxes is wrong is it inherently creates an environment where the poor are guaranteed less funding than the rich. Some of these inner city schools were really bad and got grants after the fact, but the damage was done.

That's great, but plenty of kids learn and do just fine in less than optimal environments. Why do you think school funding should be equal everywhere and not have any ties to keeping a quality community? Why should people who care about their children's education be penalized to support those who don't?

Also, since you apparently believe that giving the districts even more money (despite the already incredibly high amount they get) will magically fix things. I'm interested in why you believe that, as I asked above -

Here's another question for you, what is different about low-income AA households that means they, for some reason, need higher per student funding than others? Throwing money at a problem resulting from an entire culture that doesn't give a **** is not going to fix the problem, it will just take money away from useful causes. If these communities want better schools they'll need to fix the problem at the root - themselves.

That would be a logical assumption but in practice it really doesn't work that way. The super poor and poor performing schools get tons of state and federal grants and end up with more money per student. The largest and poorest performing district in my state gets 7 times the amount of money per student than the little country school I graduated from. When I say poorest performing I mean it's Balitmore and Detroit levels of bad. In my high school class out of 42 students we had 2 MDs, a dentist, a Physics PhD from one of the top schools in the country and some others with post grad degrees while around half at least got a bachelor's. The money per student doesn't matter after a certain point.

I have no sympathy for people who cannot pass during covid. School is easy as hell in the first place and during covid it's literally never been easier. If you can't pass now, you're a moron and lazy as ****. Teachers can't even fail half these kids so it's pretty bad if you can't get the job done.

Don't interrupt his diatribe with facts. I've already pointed out that Baltimore gets the fifth highest funding per student out of the largest 100 districts.

He has no answer as to why giving them more money will fix it, because it won't. The only thing that will fix it is the community taking a nice long look in the mirror.

IDK what this all means but I was something like 600/603 in my graduating class in HS.

I had I think a 1.0 GPA but I took summer school 4 years, I managed to pass those mostly. That's including the one prior to Freshman year, so I didn't have to make up classes after Graduation.

I skimmed by with D's in my classes and got to walk with my class without taking classes post Senior spring semester.

I excelled in elective classes which helped. Woodshop, Ceramics, I did OK in guitar 1. I passed Auto engine tune-up and Auto chasis brakes for physics credit.

I was particularly good at least for my record in Government and I was OK in Econ. It helped that the Gov teacher was pretty great. There was even this really pretty girl that asked me questions about things because I was so outspoken with teacher interactions in that class. I should have asked her out. Oh well. I also did quite well in Drafting and CAD and Architecture.

So many stories. I guess it's story time.

I had to take World Studies a 2nd time my senior year and that teacher was phenomenal as well. His wife was a guidance counselor and she hooked me up cuz I had probably the same number of absences as the kid in the OP but she gave me like 4 credits for every 1 hour I spent after school picking up trash because you couldn't graduate with unexcused absences.

There were some really chit teachers but some really great ones too. When I look back on my time in High School it's fairly positive though I missed a lot of opportunities. I could have dated several girls who I knew liked me but I didn't pursue them. I could have shown up to class more often and not wasted my time screwing around ditching classes.

Fast forward to CC a decade plus later and I make the Dean's List in Machining with 4 A's and 1 B. Trick questions on the CNC final screw me from making the President's List. Also received a Scholarship for a couple grand.

IDK if it's mostly the parents fault or the teachers. I managed to graduate by the skin of my teeth. I brought myself up in the Econ class from an F to something like a 60.1% somehow. Angel on my shoulder maybe.

The moral of the story I guess is the adults need to figure out what the child excels at and nurture that to the maximum while also making sure that they aren't failing completely in the basics.

I hope this long winded story helps someone. OK I'm out.

Yea she didn’t say anything about him missing all those days. It was all the schools fault. I stay on my kids about school and they aren’t even to middle school yet.

Question though, around here you get failed for the year and have to restart, say like you didn’t get above 60 average for classes in 9th grade, then you start 9th over again. Never seen anyone go all the way to 12th and then start back at 9th. skepticalhippo.jpg
