yeah nothing sexy about dividends but they add year after year. Some REIT have like 7 or 8 % Div. freaking crazy. You win even if it drops 5% stock price in a year

It's nice to share in the profits, some businesses show strength by paying a good dividend. The money has to come from somewhere though, and is taxable.

Some businesses can provide more long-term benefit to shareholders by reinvesting cash in the business for growth. Amazon has done a great job at that.

Opponents of dividend investing say the reasoning is that because the payment is taken out of the share price and taxed at ordinary rates, it isn't worth it. Instead, they argue that they'd rather have the company use the money to reinvest and grow the business, thus increasing share prices so that when holders sell their shares they'll be taxed at the lower Long Term Capital Gains rate instead of ordinary rates.

This is bullsh/t and I personally don't agree with it. Having worked in corporate America for so many years, I can tell you bluntly that companies waste their money on hiring moronic execs that wouldn't know their as5 from their elbow, or they waste on buying unnecessary equipment that's underused, or they just squander it on other senseless bullsh/t......

Some companies engage in share buybacks which artificially inflates the prices temporarily, but if the underlying business model is poor, the share prices will eventually drop again.

I personally invest in dividend ETFs like SPHD, VOO, QQQ and PEY.... if I'm putting money in it, I want a return. I'd rather they pay me that money now instead of squandering it on bullsh/t that MIGHT increase share prices (but probably won't)

Having said this, my personal opinion is that VOO is the safest bet because it tracks the S&P500 which has a history of steady growth and it pays quarterly dividends.

QQQ also pays quarterly dividends, and SPHD and PEY pay monthly dividends.
She don't you love you, mane...

My main issue with a dividend portfolio is getting hammered on taxes. My research shows going with a growth portfolio then selling off 3-4% per year on retirement seems to be the superior path.

I really don't like the idea of whittling away though. I'd like to hold some dividends and REITs when I retire.

Which REIT have 8% dividends? I'm holding any REIT right now, but an 8% dividend is juicy.

Dividends are taxable upon receipt and cause the value of the stock to decrease after issuance. Basically like cashing out a small portion of your stock every few months.

Real estate comes with a different set of risks but is a better "passive income" option since it pays much more consistently than dividends.

I understand the irony since real estate income and dividends are both taxed as income, however, if I buy a stock I expect to pay 15% LTCG, not 25%+ income tax.

lol @ people who care about cashflow from their investments when they're not even retired

I guess you can dream and pretend your dividends are worth something, but its just coming out of your overall return... just lol @ investing in "dividend stocks" and not being retired

obviously your stocks that pay out higher dividends will have lower valuation growth on average, its not like the money comes out of thin air, it comes out of the stock price so your chitty dividend stocks will end up growing less (srs)

Do you believe benefits of production should be owned by labour force rather than by those that own the income producing assets?

You will grow up one day and realize capitalism is king and investors and financial capital are responsible for a large amount of growth of company and general production overall.

Why dont you go out into the world without any money, without taking any loans or equipment and see how productive you really are.

Stocks without dividends return more in the long term, however, no dividend hate here.

Dividends ain't all bad. If you retire with $500k after a lifetime of savings, then a 4% dividend yield could net you $20k / year. You can probably set some annuity or something to supplement your social security, just off those dividends.

I currently get about $1k / year in dividends, but I'm still young.

One issue with dividends is that a lot of the companies that pay dividends are considered "boring" -- companies like Pfizer, JnJ, Abbvie, Coca-Cola etc.

Putting larger amounts of money into dividend-paying companies when their stock prices are low is the way to go

I'm making about $6k/year compounding right now on stonks with a $95k book cost

Our savings account is mostly invested in tax free muni bond funds that kick out 4-5% which is reinvested. Growing a few thousand dollars a year doing nothing. It can be liquidated in 24 hours too, so beyond having rainy day cash in a regular savings account getting pennies, I don't know why more people don't use dividends.
