“Agents spying on Sinaloa Cartel associates traces two of their high powered, semi-automatic rifles to a surprising source- a supervisor with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
Joseph Michael Gill, tasked with rooting out traffickers during Americas deadliest drug crisis likely helped arm them during some of his 645 sales transactions on Gunbroker.com, according to court records.”

Genuine question ... what law did he break?
AFAIK, the only requirement for private gun sales in AZ is the purchaser must be 18yo for long guns and 21 for handguns. No background checks or anything required
If he legally sold firearms to someone and the purchaser smuggled them to Mexico how is it the seller's at fault?
Unless they can prove he knew the purchaser was part of the cartel what crime did he commit?

That's why you don't fight cartels with locals. They are connected by family, friends, or can just buy off people. They need to bring in a third party like some foreign legion with enough fire-power and wipe them off. They can't blackmail anyone's family, can't try to buy them off or anything. It's a losing war if you're gonna try using locals to combat crime in a poor country.

But it doesn't sound like there's evidence that he knew they were in the cartel. Even if you wanted to call it, "willful ignorance" 3/200 sales ending up in the hands of the cartel isn't really strong evidence
To the DEA agent he's just making a private sale. It sounds like it's illegal for him to hold an FFL license ... Which is funny because if he had an FFL he would be required to do a background check and likely would have realized that the buyers were cartel members
The article implies that the purchaser was a resident of AZ and the DEA agent confirmed
"Gill said he didn't know the men were suspected drug traffickers and he did all that is legally required, checking the buyers' drivers' licenses, and verifying they were of legal age and lived in his home state of Arizona."

What are you talking about?
He’s saying IF the cop sold the guns to person X and IF the cop didn’t know person X then sold the guns to the cartel or the cop didn’t know person X was part of the cartel... what crime did he commit?
Obviously if he was “working with” the cartel, he did something illegal and that’s not because it’s an “innate law”.

If you read the article he broke the law by selling hundreds of guns without a license.
He also bought guns for $632 and sold them for $1k, an obvious red flag near the border, something a DEA agent definitely knows. Let alone someone in his position in the DEA for over 15 years
IMO his sentence is fair. He’s just got community service, house arrest and probation.
