More that they tried to make one platform to do it all. The f-16 performs quite a bit worse than the f-15, but they are still functional.

I am glad they didn't succeed in dismantling the warhogs, but they do desperately need an upgrade.

I think the problem is that we want one combat aircraft that does it all and that's just not possible.

To put some context on this issue that some may not understand, the Air Force acquisition model for the future is going to change soon to support rapid technology development & production. This is because of China. It's a rapid development model that was utilized during the Cold War to enable us to constantly field competitive and cutting edge aircraft, in low quantities.

With that said, the F-35 was a product of the post-Cold War acquisition environment where there wasn't a necessity to field cutting edge aircraft every 5-10 years. Instead, every legislator wanted a piece of the production puzzle in their state (because the revenue & jobs could be politicized) and that in turn funnels MIC political donations back to the politicians. Anyways, they had to divy it out, and also split it out to other countries to make them more dependent on the US for cutting edge aircraft. There's a lot more to it than this, but you get the jist.

Anyways, F-35 tech isn't technically outdated, but the acquisition of it is. At the rate they want to develop & produce aircraft within the next few years (already demonstrated within the 6th Gen NGAD thread I posted last year), the F-35's production timeline would have us mass producing aged technology in an environment that embraces cutting edge development to maintain an asymmetric advantage RE: China.

Staying cutting edge doesn't have time for pork barrel bullchit and endless logrolling. Staying cutting edge is a matter of national security, but politicians are placing their own political survival above the nation's security. Good to know.
