The STURDY Act, a Bill Meant to Stop Fatal Furniture Tip-Overs, Is Reintroduced

A toddler’s recent death, caused by a dresser that fell onto him, highlights the need for a law requiring stable furniture

    February 24, 2021

    Legislation That Could Save Lives

Yet tip-over tragedies are preventable. It is possible to make stable, affordable, dressers that don’t risk tipping over, dresser testing by Consumer Reports has found. But currently, there is only a voluntary stability standard for dressers—established by ASTM International, an independent standard-setting organization—which consumer safety advocates say is too weak to protect children from tip-overs.

It is pretty important to secure items to not fall on children. Looks like TVs are dangerous.

    • In the United States, 469 children died from furniture, TV, and appliance tip-over incidents between 2000 and 2019.
    • Between 2017 and 2019, an estimated 11,300 children were treated in hospital emergency rooms yearly due to furniture, TV, and appliance tip-overs.
    • 91% of reported tip-over fatalities occurred inside a home.
    • Between 2000 and 2019, 77% of all furniture, TV, and appliance tip-over fatalities involved children under 6 years old.
    • Between 2000 and 2019, 89% of tip-over-related-fatalities among minors (under 18) involved children under 5 years old.

Sweet. And that is the parents job.

Imagine a furniture inspection squad handing out tickets some day. You can sell furniture in one piece but will it be illegal to repurpose it or use it when it’s damaged?

    LMAO

People are so scared of this world they want the government to send someone out to wipe their asses so they don’t use too much pressure themselves.

They'll just have some regulatory thing for the licensing at the plant. Get over it srsly. If it saves some kids from dying and barely inconveniences anyone, it's worth it.

They can, but documenting that their product meets official standards gives them a low cost layer of protection in the inevitable lawsuit.

What about documenting that they EXCEED current standards? Or is that not the same thing...

They can do that too, but it's harder to document and it can end up hurting in a lawsuit.

Bicycle helmets suffer from this problem. Trek/Bontrager recently put out a helmet that made claims about safety beyond just putting the usual CPSC or ASTM rating sticker on it.

First person who got a concussion and felt like suing filed a huge lawsuit over exaggerated safety claims.

This is absolutely necessary. Children are our future. Do you want them to die?

Once these standards are in place, all existing non-compliant furniture must be removed from homes to ensure all furniture in all homes is compliant and safe for children. We need a new government agency to go door to door inspecting people's homes.

If you don't consent to a search you are a ****phobe and support infanticide.

How are THE CHILDREN going to know its not smart to use open drawers for ladders and TV's can fall hurt you if climbed upon now that our progressive educators are doing away with advanced learning classes? Now even the ones that were in the Accelerated Classes are going to be killed, too.

On the other hand, maybe transgender toddlers are less prone to mischief...

It's not the idea of non-tipping furniture that is bad, it's how it will be done.

How will furniture be regulated? Will there be a new licensing system to make furniture? What new taxes will need to be implemented to support the new jobs of furniture inspectors? Will every piece of furniture have to be tested by the government to insure compliance? How long will the testing process last?

How will backyard furniture makers afford to make 10 copies of the same custom piece and deliver them to the government for official testing? Will grandpa be arrested for making a dresser or a crib for his grandkids?

It'll be done the same way it has for decades. There are already tipping standards for most consumer goods, there is a push to strengthen them for dressers and other furniture right now. CPSC takes a long time to make changes, so congress feels a need to get involved, but this bill is originally from 2019 so they are slow too.

It seems that the posters who get rustled about this stuff do so mostly because they are fukking ignorant.
