Barbell Storage - Horizontal Wall Mounted vs Vertical Hang?

Only a few bars. Currently lean them into corners but looking to buy or make a rack.

Vertical hang option seems like it will take up less room (if that makes any sense?) but horizontal may look cooler?

If you have wall space then I like to store my Olympic bars horizontally, coming from a weightlifting background we were always told to store bearing bars horizontally, but I can't say I've had any issues when bars were stored in the vertical position.

I have a Rogue 6 bar gun rack and it works well for me, but you have to allow room to access the bars and this does take up potential equipment space.

I try to store my specialist bars vertically, Swiss/ Football bars just hang on a wall hook.

I have mine in a 5 bar vertical stand and it's fine. I'd rather have a horizontal gun rack style though but my layout doesn't allow for it. I think it's easier to use that way and like Richard said, supposedly you should store bearing bars horizontally. I haven't noticed any issues from storing mine vertical either and I'll continue to do so but my main bar usually stays on the rack anyway.

it's not the storing, it's the chance that someone lets the bar drop into the vertical floor holders

I prefer vertical storage, whether wall mount or floor stand, for space reasons. Vertical storage does present the problem of ceiling clearance, especially if you are using a floor holder instead of wall mount, but I've got 8' to the joists + the ceiling is open so it's not a problem. If I had a massive space I'd probably do everything horizontally because a giant wall of bars does look cool, but eating 7' of wall space plus some of the area in front of it isn't efficient in my gym.

I do have 2 horizontal gun racks, but only use one right now because I have a power rack in front of the other one. Specialty bars/log go into a 9-bar floor rack, and I also have 4 vertical holders on my Ultra Pro rack plus a smaller 9-bar vertical floor rack that I use to hold more bars and smaller stuff like curl bar, seal row bar, dumbbell handles, etc.

The old guys in the weightlifting club used to say the lubricant drained away from the bearings when the bar was stored vertically, I can't say I've seen evidence of this, but it was certainly a strongly held belief when I was a kid.

I've observed recently that a little lubricant drained from a freshly lubricated bar, but vertical storage also makes it easy to dump some 3-in-1 oil straight into the bottom bushing/bearing and top end cap (invert to lubricate the opposite ends), so vertical storage seems fine and even advantageous if you maintain and use your bars. For long-term storage without regular use and maintenance, I'd feel better about horizontal. This is OCD stuff though. If you buy decent bars and occasionally oil, store them however you want and you should be fine.
